FORT WAYNE, Ind. - The TinCaps blew a 4-0 lead, but came back to beat the West Michigan Whitecaps, 7-6, Sunday at Parkview Field. Jeudy Valdez hit a game-winning single in the bottom of the 9th.
Fort Wayne pounded out 14 hits. Rymer Liriano went 3-for-3 with a double and two walks and Nate Freiman went 3-for-4 with a pair of doubles.
The TinCaps took a 4-0 lead in the 4th inning. Jason Hagerty bounced a two-run single up the middle, off the pitching hand of West Michigan LHP Jade Todd. Todd exited the game with an injury. Later in the inning, Jonathan Galvez and Valdez each drew a bases-loaded walk to push the lead to 4-0.
Fort Wayne LHP Mike Watt worked five scoreless innings, but the bullpen ran into trouble in the 6th, giving up five consecutive hits and five runs. The big blow was a game-tying two-run double by Luis Palacios, then Eric Roof put the Whitecaps ahead, 5-4.
The TinCaps rallied to tie it in the 7th on a single by Edinson Rincon, then took the lead in the 8th on an RBI single by Danny Payne, which made it a 6-5 game.
West Michigan tied it in the top of the 9th when Jamie Johnson led off with a double and Michael Rockett drove him in with a single. After a strikeout, Jordan Lennerton smashed a liner to first, which was caught by Freiman, who stepped on first for an inning-ending double play.
In the bottom of the 9th, Liriano started the rally with a two-out single to right. Galvez followed with a single to put runners at the corners, then Payne was intentionally walked to load the bases. Valdez hit a soft liner to center which fell in for a game-winning single.
RHP Nick Schumacher (2-1) picked up the win despite allowing the tying run in the top of the 9th. Whitecaps RHP Jose Ortega (0-2) took the loss.
