South Bend Silver Hawks News Release
Eastlake, OH - The South Bend Silver Hawks homered twice in a game for the only the second time this season, defeating the Lake County Captains 6-3 on Sunday afternoon at Classic Park.
South Bend jumped on Lake County starter Matt Packer (LP, 2-2) for three runs in the top of the first. Chris Owings reached on a one-out error, Bobby Borchering walked, and Matt Davidson drove everybody home with a home run to straightaway center field. Davidson upped his season RBI total to a team-high 26 on his sixth homer of the year, giving the Hawks an early 3-0 lead.
Neither starting pitcher lasted long in the game. Packer, in a spot start, went just 3.0 innings, allowing the three runs (two earned). South Bend starter Eric Smith (ND) pitched only one scoreless inning in a pre-determined effort to limit his innings count for the season.
Borchering got into the home run act with a solo shot against reliever Nick Sarianides (ND) in the top of the fifth. Borchering's line drive shot over the wall in center was his fourth home run this season and it raised the Hawks lead to 4-0.
After Smith left, Diogenes Rosario (WP, 3-0) entered in relief and turned in another sensational outing. Rosario went the next 4.2 innings, allowing only one unearned run on a Chun Chen RBI single in the bottom of the sixth. Rosario stretched his scoreless inning streak to 13.1 straight before allowing the run and departing in the sixth inning.
Lake County added two runs against Rafael Quezada (ND) in the bottom of the seventh to draw within one, but the Silver Hawks got the runs right back in the top of the eighth. Andrew Fie had a RBI double to score Matt Helm, and Alberto Diaz added a RBI single to make it a 6-3 ballgame. Diaz now has five RBIs in the series and 12 on the season.
Randy Rodriguez (ND) pitched a scoreless eighth and Yonata Ortega (SV, 9) tossed a 1-2-3 ninth for his ninth save of the season and his second of the series.
The teams wrap up the four game series on Monday evening with a 6:30 PM first pitch. RHP Scottie Allen (0-1, 5.79 ERA) makes his second start of the year for the Silver Hawks, while Lake County sends RHP Austin Adams (1-2, 3.73 ERA) to the mound. Pregame coverage begins at 6:10 PM Eastern Time on 1620 ESPN Radio and online at www.silverhawks.com.
