Bowling Green Beats Dragons 6-4

Dayton, Ohio-Reliever Scott Shuman pitched out of a bases loaded jam after allowing one run in the bottom of the ninth inning as the Bowling Green Hot Rods held on to defeat the Dayton Dragons 6-4 on Sunday afternoon before a crowd of 8,929 at Fifth Third Field.

The Dragons trailed 6-3 entering the ninth when Shuman issued back-to-back walks with one out to bring the tying run to the plate. Tommy Nurre singled to left to drive in one run and make it 6-4. Josh Garton walked to load the bases and move the tying run to second. Frank Pfister's bid for a walk-off grand slam home run hooked foul well beyond the left field fence. On the next pitch, Pfister struck out swinging. Shuman fell behind Shane Carlson 3-0, but came back to strike out Carlson swinging to end the game.

Bowling Green scored two runs in the top of the first inning to take an early lead. The Dragons tied the game with two runs in the second on a Pfister double, a run-scoring triple by Carlson, and a two-out RBI single by Cameron Satterwhite to make it 2-2. But Bowling Green added single runs in the fourth, fifth, sixth, and seventh innings to build a 6-2 lead.

The Dragons cut the deficit to 6-3 in the eighth on a solo home run by Josh Garton, setting the stage for the ninth inning dramatics.

The Dragons finished with 10 hits. Nurre, Garton, and Satterwhite each had two.

Dragons starting pitcher J.C. Sulbaran suffered the loss. He worked five innings, allowing nine hits and four earned runs with two walks and three strikeouts.

Dayton (18-26) hosts Bowling Green (16-27) in the series finale on Monday at Fifth Third Field at 7:00 p.m. Josh Ravin (2-3, 3.27) will start for Dayton against Bowling Green's Aaron Dott (0-1, 12.00).
