'Cats Start Road Trip with 10-6 Win
July 8, 2015 - New York-Penn League (NYPL)
Tri-City ValleyCats News Release
WILLIAMSPORT, PA - The Tri-City ValleyCats had three different batters post multi-hit nights, and six different batters drive in at least one run, as they defeated the Williamsport Crosscutters 10-6 at Bowman Field, in Williamsport, Penn., to kick off a six-game road trip.
Tri-City got the scoring started early, when Johnny Sewald led off the game with a single, then stole both second and third base before being driven home on a sacrifice fly by Bryan Muñiz.
The 'Cats then added three more runs in the top of the fourth inning, when Bobby Wernes and Keach Ballard added RBI base hits, and Brooks Marlow scored on a Williamsport error.
The Crosscutters did make the game interesting, scoring three runs of their own in the bottom of the fourth, before left-handed pitcher Zac Person entered the game with two outs, and struck out Jesus Posso, Williamsport's designated hitter, with runners on first and third.
Despite having the Crosscutters trim the 'Cats lead to 4-3, the Tri-City offense kept pushing, scoring one run each in the top of the fifth, seventh, and eighth innings, before pushing three across in the top of the ninth.
Wernes led the way in the hit column for the 'Cats, finishing 3-for-4 with two runs batted in, while Anthony Hermelyn went 2-for-4 with two runs batted in, and Sewald went 3-for-6 with three stolen bases and a run scored. After those three swiped bags, Sewald has now stolen bases successfully in each of his twelve attempts, and those 12 steals are tied for the league lead.
The ValleyCats victory gave the host Crosscutters, who are tied with the Brooklyn Cyclones for the top record in the New York-Penn League at 13-5, their first home defeat of the season.
Tri-City will look to stay on the winning track when they face off against Williamsport on Thursday at 7:05 p.m., in the second game of a three-game set. Getting the start for the ValleyCats will be RHP Ralph Garza (0-0, 4.26), with RHP Alejandro Arteaga (3-0, 1.59) on the mound for the Crosscutters.
