Cyclones Stay Hot with 5-3 Win over Renegades

FISHKILL, NY - July 8, 2015 - The Cyclones continued their hot start with a 5-3 victory over the Hudson Valley Renegades on Wednesday night. David Thompson went 4-for-5 with an RBI to pace the offense. On the mound, the Brooklyn bullpen tossed 3.2 scoreless frames and has not allowed a run over their last 15.1 innings.

Brooklyn wasted no time getting on the scoreboard, drawing first blood in their first turn at bat. Tucker Tharp led off the game with a walk and advanced to second on a balk from Renegades starter Greg Maisto. With Tharp in scoring position, David Thompson did what he does best, and lined a singled to left field to give Brooklyn the early 1-0 advantage.

Maisto and Cyclones starter Gaby Almonte (2-1) matched zeroes in the second and third before Brooklyn added to their lead in the top of the fourth.

Michael Bernal, who returned to the starting lineup for the first time since July 3rd and he recovered from a groin injury, started the frame with a single and David Thompson followed with his second hit of the game to put a pair of runners on with nobody out. Enmanuel Zabala grounded into a fielder's choice, for the first out of the inning, to put runners on the corners. With Jeff Diehl at the plate and Bernal dancing off of third base, Renegades catcher Taylor Hawkins tried to throw behind the Brooklyn right fielder, but the throw was wide and went into left field allowing Bernal to score and moving Zabala to second base. After Diehl walked, Zach Mathieu kept the train moving right along with an RBI single before Manuel Hilario had an RBI groundout to cap the really and make it 4-0.

After cruising through the first three frames, Almonte ran into trouble in the bottom of the fourth. Hector Montes connected on a one-out triple to start the threat and after a fly out from Joe McCarthy, Michael Russell roped a single to right field that put runners on the corners with two-outs. With Manny Sanchez at the plate for the 'Gades, Russell tried to steal second and Brooklyn catcher Manuel Hilario air mailed his throw into center field which allowed Montes to score easily and slice the Brooklyn lead to 4-1.

But Brooklyn struck back quickly thanks to a two-out rally in the top of the fifth. For the second time in as many innings, Bernal and Thompson got things started with back-to-back singles before Zabala roped a single to right field, scoring Bernal and extending the Brooklyn lead to 5-1.

The Renegades continued the see-saw scoring, plating two runs in the bottom of the sixth to make it 5-3 and chase Almonte from the game. But as has been the case so far this season, the Brooklyn bullpen was flawless, allowing just one hit to close out the game.

Craig Missigman limited the damage in the sixth and went on to toss 1.2 shutout frames before turning the ball over to P.J. Conlon who pitched a scoreless eighth to set up Alex Palsha for his fourth save of the season.

With the win, Brooklyn improved to 13-5 on the season and won their fourth straight game. The Cyclones will take on the Renegades again on Thursday at MCU Park in the middle game of the three-game commuter series. LHP Blake Taylor will make his Cyclones debut when he takes the mound for Brooklyn. It's a Jersday Thursday at MCU Park so that means the first 3,000 fans in attendance will go home with a Black & Red jersey courtesy of Verizon.
