NYPL Mahoning Valley Scrappers

Scrappers Stumble to begin Trip

July 8, 2015 - New York-Penn League (NYPL)
Mahoning Valley Scrappers News Release

The Mahoning Valley Scrappers (5-13) opened their six-game road trip with a 9-4 loss to the Vermont Lake Monsters (7-11) at Centennial Field on Wednesday night.

Leandro Linares' night got off to a rough start, and never got any easier. Steven Pallares hit his first home run of the year in the bottom of the first.

In the bottom of the second, Seth Brown scored on a force out for Gabriel Santana. With Santana and Howell both on, they scored on a single for Pallares. The next batter, Mikey White, hit a three-run home run to left, which was a controversial call because of where the ball went past the left field foul pole.

Vermont scored six of its nine runs in the first two innings.

For Mahoning Valley, Mark Mathias had three hits. In the top of the fourth, he scored on an RBI single for Emmanuel Tapia. Nate Winfrey scored on a double by Li-Jen Chu.

The Scrappers added more in the top of the sixth. Tapia singled to right. Chu hit a triple to right center to score Tapia.

Mahoning Valley loses its fifth straight, but had 12 hits. The offense continues to hit the ball and get men on base, but it still has a difficult time turning those hits into runs.

Leandro Linares earns the loss (0-3). He went two and one-third innings giving up five hits, eight runs, seven of those earned, walking four and striking out three. Scrapper pitching allowed eight walks, which was just shy of its season high of ten. Heath Bowers (1-0) got the win for the Lake Monsters.

Mahoning Valley and Vermont face off again on Thursday morning. First pitch is set for 11:05 a.m.
