NORWICH, CT-The Connecticut Tigers (9-9) fell in a rain shortened game to the State College Spikes (9-9) by a final score of 4-0. The game, which was played for most of the night in a light mist that was heavier at times, was called after six and a half innings.
In a game that began as a pitchers duel it was State College that was able to manufacture some runs. Tyler Alexander (0-0) started the game for Connecticut and was brilliant. He worked the first three innings of the game allowing no hits and striking out one.
However, the story on this night was State College starter Ian McKinney (2-2) who worked six innings and scattered three hits. McKinney would strike out four and walk just one. It was the third time this year McKinney went at least six innings in a game. The only real trouble McKinney got into was in his final inning but he was able to get a double play ball to end an inning that saw runners on first and second with one out.
Gerson Moreno (0-2) entered the game in the fourth and worked into some trouble. Catcher Jesse Jenner walked and moved to third on a singled by first basemen Casey Grayson (1-3) who leads the league in hitting. Jenner later came into score on a wild pitch making it 1-0.
State College, with Moreno still on the mound, put the game away the next inning. After the first two men reached right fielder Thomas Spitz (1-3, RBI, 2B, R) doubled in a run pushing the score to 2-0. The next batter was leftfielder Mike Pritchard who produced a sacrifice fly. State College scored one more in the inning on an error and held a 4-0 lead after five innings.
Connecticut will play State College tomorrow in the middle game of the three game series. The first pitch on Thursday is scheduled for 7:05 p.m.
The Connecticut Tigers are the New York-Penn League affiliate of the Detroit Tigers and play a 76 game schedule that runs from mid June through early September. 2015 season tickets, group tickets, mini plans, individual game tickets, and team merchandise are now on sale!
