Vermont Lake Monsters News Release
BURLINGTON, VT --- Mikey White and Steven Pallares both had three hits, including a home run, to help lead the Vermont Lake Monsters to a 9-4 victory over the Mahoning Valley Scrappers in New York-Penn League action Wednesday night at historic Centennial Field.
Pallares got the Lake Monsters on the board in the bottom of the first inning with a solo home run to leftfield and then added a two-run single in the second inning for a 4-0 Vermont lead. White then followed with a three-run homer just inside the leftfield foul pole to cap off the Lake Monsters third six-run inning of the season.
Vermont added single runs in the third and fourth innings to take a 9-2 lead after the Scrappers had gotten a Emmanuel Tapia RBI single and Li-Jen Chu RBI double in the top of the fourth. The Scrappers added single runs in the sixth (a Chu RBI triple) and eighth (David Armendariz RBI double) innings.
White was 3-for-3 with a walk, hit by pitch and two runs scored to go along with the three-run homer, his second of the season. Pallares was 2-for-5 with a pair of runs scored, while the home run was the first of his professional career. Seth Brown was 1-for-2 with three walks for the Lake Monsters, while Heath Bowers (1-0) earned the victory despite allowing two runs (one earned) on four hits over two innings. Evan Manarino allowed two hits and struckout a batter over three scoreless innings in his first start for Vermont.
Leandro Linares (0-3) was charged with eight runs (seven earned) on five hits, four walks and three strikeouts over 2 1/3 innings to take the loss, while Tapia was 3-for-5 with two runs and an RBI for the Scappers. The loss was the fifth in a row for Mahoning Valley (5-13).
Vermont (7-11), which has gone 6-6 over the last 12 games since a 1-5 start to the season, hosts Mahoning Valley again on Thursday at a special start time of 11:05 am. Parking is extremely limited at Centennial Field and not available at the Trinity Lot, so fans are encouraged to park at the Gutterson Fieldhouse Parking Garage and take the shuttle bus to and from the game.
