Tri-City ValleyCats News Release
NORWICH, CT - Bobby Wernes hit a two-out single to right field in the top of the ninth inning, but right fielder Joey Havrilak threw out Kolbey Carpenter trying to score from second, as the Connecticut Tigers held on to defeat the Tri-City ValleyCats 2-1 on Tuesday night, in Norwich, Conn.
Wernes actually put the ValleyCats ahead in the top of the second inning, driving home Dexture McCall with an RBI single to left field for his first professional hit, as well as his first professional run batted in.
Unfortunately, the Tigers tied the game up in the bottom of the third inning, when Connecticut third baseman Josh Lester drove home second baseman Patrick Mackenzie with a sacrifice fly off of Tri-City starter Trent Thornton.
That was the only run allowed by Thornton, who struck out six batters without issuing a walk through four innings. It was the first professional start for the 2015 fifth-round draft pick out of the University of North Carolina, who made his two prior 'Cats appearances out of the bullpen.
The Tigers took the lead in the bottom of the fifth frame, when designated hitter Christin Stewart hit a bloop double to center field, driving home Lester to make the score 2-1.
That's where the score stood heading into the top of the ninth, when McCall hit an infield single down the third base line with one out. Carpenter then reached on a fielders choice grounder that had McCall forced out at second. Carpenter then moved to second base on a pinch-hit single by Cesar Carrasco, which brought up Wernes.
Wernes then smacked his second base hit of the day with a line drive to right field, but Havrilak rifled a throw home to the catcher Will Allen, who slapped the tag on Carpenter, preserving the win for the Tigers.
The ValleyCats will now face off with the Vermont Lake Monsters tomorrow, beginning a three-game series. Getting the start for Tri-City will be RHP Agapito Barrios (0-0, 0.00), while Johnathan Massid (1-0, 0.84) will be on the mound for the Lake Monsters.
The contest will be the first in a six-game homestand featuring three games against Vermont Lake Monsters from July 1-3, followed by three games against the Lowell Spinners.
