NYPL Mahoning Valley Scrappers

Scrappers Arms Lead Way in 2-1 Win

June 30, 2015 - New York-Penn League (NYPL)
Mahoning Valley Scrappers News Release

The Mahoning Valley Scrappers (4-7) pitching was dominant in a 2-1 victory over the Williamsport Crosscutters (10-1) at Eastwood Field on Tuesday night.

All three games in the series began in some sort of delay due to weather. The Scrappers jumped out early, scoring two runs in the bottom of the second. Willi Castro hit a two-run double to right center to score Emmanuel Tapia and David Armendariz.

Williamsport responded with a run in the top of the third. Gregori Rivero doubled and later scored on a wild pitch by Shao-Ching Chiang. The Scrappers led 2-1 after the second inning, and that was all the scoring of the game.

Mahoning Valley pitching proved to be much better, especially against a dangerous Williamsport offense. The Scrappers were able to get the victory, which snapped a five-game losing streak, ended the undefeated start for the Crosscutters, and get their first win on their home field this season.

Chiang (2-0) earned the win for Mahoning Valley, while Luis Morales (0-1) picked up the loss for Williamsport. Jose Zapata earned his first save of the season for the Scrappers.

The Scrappers now visit Dwyer Stadium for a three-game series against the Batavia Muckdogs. The last time the Scrappers were in Batavia, the Muckdogs combined to throw the third perfect game in New York-Penn League history. Right-hander Casey Shane gets the ball for the Scrappers. First pitch is set for 7:05, with coverage beginning at 6:45 on Sports Radio 1240.
