Norwich Sea Unicorns News Release

NORWICH, CT-The Connecticut Tigers (5-6) won their third game in a row as they completed a series sweep over the Tri-City ValleyCats (5-7) with a 2-1 victory.

Connecticut made the game interesting in the ninth. With Jordan Smith (SV 3) on the mound and runners on first and second and two outs Tri-City third basemen Bobby Wernes (2-3, RBI) singled to right. Keach Ballard who was pinch running was waved home from second but right fielder Joey Havrilak threw a one hop strike to the plate for the final out of the game.

Early on both teams where locked in a pitchers duel. Connecticut's Sandy Baez (1-1) rebounded from a poor start his last time out by throwing five innings allowing just one run on two hits and four strikeouts. The ValleyCats starter Trent Thornton (0-1) was nearly just as good. The righty making his first start of the year threw four innings striking out six and allowing just a single run on six hits.

Tri-City opened the scoring in the top of the second inning. First basemen Dexture McCall led the inning off with a walk and moved to second on a fielder's choice. Still there with two outs Wernes singled home the first run of the game giving Tri-City a 1-0 lead.

Connecticut tied the game in the bottom of the third inning. Second basemen Pat Mackenzie (1-3, R, BB) led off the inning with a triple, his second in two days, and scored one batter later after a sacrifice fly from third basemen Josh Lester (1-3, RBI, 2B).

Two innings later Connecticut took the lead for good as they faced Tri-City reliever Scott Weathersby (0-1). With two outs and nobody on Lester doubled to right on a ball that deflected off the glove of the ValleyCats first basemen Bryan Muniz. The next batter was designated hitter Christin Stewart and he was able to bloop a double into centerfield between three Tri-City defenders. The hit gave the Tigers there 2-1 lead.

Drew Smith (3 IP, 3 K) bridged the gap to Jordon Smith by throwing three shut out innings. For Smith it was his longest outing of the season.
