Vermont Lake Monsters News Release
BURLINGTON, VT --- The Vermont Lake Monsters rallied with four runs in the bottom of the ninth inning to tie game, but Luis Alexander Basabe hit his second home run of the night in the top of the 10th inning to give the Lowell Spinners 7-6 in New York-Penn League action Tuesday night at historic Centennial Field.
Vermont took a 1-0 lead on a Chris Iriart RBI single in the bottom of the first, but Basabe smashed a three-run homer in the top of the third and Chad De La Guerrera added a two-run homer in the fourth to give Lowell a 5-1 lead. The Lake Monsters got a unearned run back in the fifth inning on a Vicmal De La Cruz RBI groundout, but the Spinners got that run back in the sixth with an unearned run of their own.
Ryan Howell cut the deficit in half with a two-run homer in the bottom of the ninth inning and Vermont was able to tack on two more runs to tie the game. Trace Loehr cut the lead to 6-5 with an RBI groundout and the Lake Monsters were then able to tie the game with two outs when Steven Pallares scored from second base on a Mikey White pop up in the infield that was dropped by first baseman Josh Ockimey for an error.
Basabe quickly put the Spinners back on top as he led off the 10th with a solo homer off Lake Monsters reliever Cody Kurz (0-2). Vermont was able to put the tying and winning runs aboard with one out in the bottom of the 10th, but Edwar Garcia struckout Howell and De La Cruz to end the game.
Gabriel Santana went 3-for-5 with two runs scored and Pallares was 2-for-4 with two runs scored, while starter Kyle Freidrichs had three strikeouts in retiring all six batters he faced in his two innings of work for Vermont. De La Guerra was 2-for-3 with two runs and three RBI for Lowell (10-2), which has won five of six games this season against the Lake Monsters at Centennial Field.
Vermont (4-7) head out on a six-game roadtrip to Tri-City and Connecticut before returning home to start a six-game homestand on Wednesday, July 8th against Mahoning Valley.
