Tri-City ValleyCats News Release
WAPPINGERS FALLS, NY - Hector Roa drove home Aaron Mizell with an RBI single to break a scoreless tie with one out in the top of the ninth inning, as the Tri-City ValleyCats shut out the Hudson Valley Renegades by the score of 1-0, at Dutchess Stadium in Wappingers Falls, N.Y., on Tuesday night.
Rogelio Armenteros got the start for the 'Cats, tossing four scoreless innings, while allowing only one hit, and striking out three batters.
David Schmidt, who relieved Armenteros to begin the fifth, struck out one batter in one scoreless frame, before giving way to left-hander Alex Winkelman.
Winkelman, who was recognized on Monday by the Houston Astros Player Development Department as the ValleyCats' Pitcher of the Month for July, also held the Renegades scoreless, striking out four batters, while allowing only two hits in three innings.
Unfortunately, the Hudson Valley pitching staff was also able to hold the ValleyCats without a run through eight innings. However, Mizell reached first base by getting hit by a pitch to lead off the top of the ninth, before moving to second on a ground out by Pat Porter.
That brought up Roa, who hit a 1-1 pitch from Hudson Valley right-hander Luis Urena into right field to bring home Mizell, and give the 'Cats a 1-0 lead.
Zac Grotz then came in to pitch the ninth inning, and went on to strike out Renegades catcher Danny De La Calle to cap a 1-2-3 frame, earning his second save of the season.
Earning the win was Winkelman, (4-0), who combined with Armenteros, Schmidt, and Grotz to give the ValleyCats their fourth shutout victory of the season.
After winning the first two contests of this three-game set, Tri-City will attempt to close out a sweep in the final game of the series on Wednesday. On the mound for the ValleyCats will be RHP Harold Arauz (0-2, 7.39), with LHP Travis Ott (3-3, 4.18) getting the start for the Renegades
