Scrapper Rebound with 10-5 Victory

After allowing 20 runs on 34 hits in the last 17 innings, the Scrappers (20-22) tied the season series with the Cutters (28-26) with a 10-5 win at Eastwood Field.

After losing two straight, the Scrapper bats came to play.

Mahoning Valley jumped out early in the second with three runs to give Kieran Lovegrove to work with. Juan De La Cruz scored on a Nate Winfrey single to center. With that hit, Winfrey extended his hit streak to 10 games. In the same inning, Austin Fisher scored on an RBI single for Jodd Carter. The Scrappers added another run in the inning with Mark Mathias reached on an error by shortstop Dylan Bosheers to score Willi Castro. It was 3-0 after two.

The Scrappers added two more in the fourth. Ka'ai Tom hit his first professional home run to extend his hit streak to eight games. Tom hit five home runs at Kentucky this past college season. The Cutters scored three in the fifth to attempt a comeback. Carlos Duran walked, and Austin Bossart was hit by a pitch. They both scored in the inning on an Austin Amaro single to center. Mark Laird scored in the inning against Matt Esparza.

Mahoning Valley added three in the bottom of the eighth to secure the win. Daniel Salters hit his second home run of the year. It was a two-run shot to right. Kieran Lovegrove did not earn a decision. He went four and two-thirds innings, giving up just two earned on two hits, while walking three and striking out two. Matt Esparza (1-0) took the win, after allowing two runs on four hits in two and one-third innings.

The Scrappers scored double digit runs against the Cutters for the second time this season. They go for the series win on Wednesday night at 7:05. Jose Taveras gets the ball for the Cutters against Scrappers righty Leandro Linares.
