Vermont Lake Monsters News Release
BURLINGTON, VT --- Jeff Hendrix led off the top of the 10th inning with a double and scored two batters later on a Thairo Estrada sacrifice fly to give the Staten Island Yankees a 3-2 extra-innings victory on Tuesday night in New York-Penn League action at historic Centennial Field.
Hendrix lined his second double of the game to begin the 10th inning off Vermont reliever Ryan Gorton and advanced to third on a sacrifice bunt by Kyle Holder before Estrada was able to hit a flyball deep to right on an 0-2 pitch to plate Hendrix with the go ahead run. Yankees reliever Andre Del Bosque got two strikeouts and a groundout in the bottom of the 10th to earn his first save of the year.
Staten Island had taken a 1-0 lead in the fourth on a Junior Valera two-out RBI double, but the Lake Monsters took the lead in the bottom of the inning on three straight two-out hits. Nick Collins got the rally started with a single to left and advanced to third on a double from Seong-min Kim, just his third hit in 41 at bats this season against a right-handed batter. Jesus Lopez, who was 2-for-31 with runners in scoring position, then lined a two-run double over Valera's head in left to give Vermont the lead.
The Yankees quickly tied the game in the fifth on Hendrix's first double of the night, a pop up to leftfield that landed behind Vermont outfielder Brett Siddall when he lost sight of it in the air. That allowed Kevin Cornelius to score from second base with the tying run.
A night after the Staten Island bullpen tossed 4 2/3 hitless innings, three Yankee relievers tossed six combined innings without allowing a hit with one walk and seven strikeouts. Will Carter tossed three hitless innings with one walk and four strikeouts, while Michael Schaub (3-1) one strikeout over two innings for the win. Hendrix was 3-for-5 with the two doubles, a run and an RBI as Staten Island (23-19) picked up their third straight win
Vermont starter Heath Bowers allowed just a leadoff single in the first inning with one walk and two strikeouts over three innings of work, while Evan Manarino was charged with two runs on five hits over the next three frames. Gorton (0-1) allowed one run on two hits over two innings to take the loss as the Lake Monsters fell to 1-4 in extra-inning games this season, including 0-3 at Centennial Field.
Vermont (17-26) has lost three straight games and five of its last six to fall a season-low nine games under the .500 mark. The Lake Monsters will look to salvage a game against Staten Island in the
series finale on Wednesday night beginning at 7:05 pm. It will be Cancer Awareness Night at the ballpark sponsored by Northeastern Reproductive Medicine.
