Lowell Spinners News Release
LOWELL, MASS. - The Lowell Spinners had just four hits Tuesday night but they made the most of them, taking advantage of some curious defense by the Brooklyn Cyclones en route to a 5-1 win at LeLacheur Park.
Lowell (23-21) got on the board in the bottom half of the first inning. Luis Alexander Basabe led off the inning with a double and came around to score on a one-out single by Chad De La Guerra to give the Spinners a 1-0 lead.
Though Jake Cosart struck out the side, all swinging, in the first, he was replaced by Enfember Martinez to start the second inning for precautionary reasons.
The Spinners added a run in the third inning when Brandon Magee reached third on a three-base error to lead off the inning. An Andrew Benintendi sacrifice fly brought him in to push the Lowell lead to 2-0.
Brooklyn (23-20) got a run back in the fourth inning after Michael Bernal ked off the inning with a walk. After a double by Jeff Diehl put a pair in scoring position, a David Thompson sacrifice fly got the Cyclones on the board before Martinez buckled down and struck out the next two batters to escape with a 2-1 lead.
Lowell would extend their lead in the fourth, as Magee again reached on an error, this time plating a pair of Spinners to extend the lead to 4-1. The Spinners would get another run in the fifth inning as Brooklyn centerfielder Enmanuel Zabala continued to struggle, misplaying his third ball of the series, dropping a fly from Mitch Gunsolus to score Tucker Tubbs and give Lowell a 5-1 lead.
Edwar Garcia loaded the bases in the eighth inning but continued his wizardry with the bases juiced continued as he struck out Zabala and Mathieu to end the inning. Garcia has now struck out five of six batters he has faced with the bases loaded in 2015. Garcia would retire the side to pick up the save and close out the win.
The Spinners had just four hits but they made them count, taking advantage of three Brooklyn errors to score their five runs. Basabe had two hits, including the leadoff double.
Cosart started and struck out all three men he faced before leaving the game. Martinez (2-1, 3.86) came in for 4.1 innings of long relief. He allowed the one run on five hits and four walks, striking out four. Garcia picked up his fifth save with 3.1 scoreless innings, striking out six.
The Spinners look to take the series Wednesday night when Jose Almonte (2-2, 4.50) gets the ball for a 7:05 first pitch.
