Cyclones Lose It in Lowell, 5-1

LOWELL, MA (August 4, 2015) -- A night after tying their season-high with 14 hits, the Brooklyn bats went back into hibernation on Tuesday evening as they fell to the Lowell Spinners by the score of 5-1. The 'Clones went 1-for-11 with RISP and left 12 men on base. But it wasn't just the bats that struggled, as the Cyclones committed three errors, which led to four unearned runs, in a sloppy loss at LeLacheur Park.

The Spinners wasted little time getting on the scoreboard this evening as Luis Alexander led off the bottom of the first with a double and came around to score on an RBI single from Chad De La Guerra that made in 1-0. The lead would expand in the third when Michael Bernal dropped a fly ball from Brandon Magee that ended up with the rightfielder on third base with nobody out. After Brooklyn starter Tyler Badamo struck out Luis Basabe for out number one, Andrew Benintendi lofted a sacrifice fly to right field to make it 2-0. On the play, Badamo injured his groin and would be forced to leave the game.

In the top of the fourth the Cyclones plated their lone run of the game after Bernal walked and advanced to third on a double off the bat of Jeff Diehl. With a pair of runners in scoring position, David Thompson took advantage of the opportunity with a sac fly that advanced both runners and sliced the Brooklyn deficit to 2-1. That is where the rally would end though, as Brandon Brosher and Enmanuel Zabala each struck out to end the threat and leave the tying run at third.

In the Spinners turn to bat in the fourth they would capitalize on a lack of command from Brooklyn reliever Ruben Reyes as they pushed home a pair of runners without a base hit. The Cyclones southpaw plunked Josh Ockimey to start the threat before walking Austin Rei and hitting Hector Lorenzana to load the bases with two outs. Brandon Magee then hit a ground ball to second base that looked like it would end the frame, but Vinny Siena booted the grounder, allowing two runs to score and push Lowell's advantage to 4-1.

In the bottom of the fifth, Ty Williams made his 2015 debut after missing the first half of the season as he recovered from a right shoulder injury. The righthander fell victim to another defensive lapse behind him as Enmanuel Zabala dropped what would have been the third out of the inning, to allow another unearned run to score and mar would was an otherwise solid debut for Williams, as Lowell's lead swelled to 5-1.

The Cyclones had numerous chances to get back into the game, leaving the bases loaded in the sixth and eighth as Zach Mathieu struck out each time to end the threat. Brooklyn even had a pair of runners in scoring position in the ninth, but Diehl struck out to end that threat as well. In total, the Cyclones left a season-high 12 runners on base and struck out 13 times.

The Cyclones loss coupled with a Staten Island Yankees victory drops the Cyclones out of first place for the first time in over a month. Brooklyn will look to rebound on Wednesday when they send RHP Gaby Almonte (5-2) to the mound in the rubber game of the three-game set. The Cyclones will then continue their eight game road trip with three more in Vermont, opening on Thursday night.
