'Cats Bats Silenced in 5-0 Defeat

May 29, 2012 - American Association (AA)
Gary SouthShore Railcats News Release

Former RailCat Cristian Guerrero's three-run homer in the top of the first capped a four-run inning for the Sioux Falls Pheasants as they went on to defeat the RailCats 5-0. Jared Bolden's RBI-single against RailCats starter Andrew Johnston gave the Pheasants the 4-0 after the first frame. Sioux Falls added a run in the third on an RBI single by Trevor Lawhorn.

Pheasants starting pitcher Mitchell Clegg quieted the RailCats offense, which had slugged out 16 runs on 20 hits in the series opener on Monday. Clegg threw seven scoreless innings, allowing just three hits and striking out four. It was the first time the RailCats have been shut out since August 14th, 2011 against Shreveport-Bossier.

Johnston (0-2) settled down after the four-run first, finishing with a season-high 6 2/3 inning outing. He struck out five Pheasants hitters and allowed nine hits. It was the first time this season a RailCats starter had pitched more than five innings.

The RailCats will wrap up the series and homestand with another 11:10 a.m. start on Wednesday morning. RailCats right-hander Derek Drage will face Pheasants righty Alan DeRatt in the pitching matchup.
