St. Paul Saints News Release
QUEBEC, QC (May 29, 2012) - Game one of the St. Paul Saints longest road trip of the season, a 10 game jaunt to the east coast, got off on the right foot with an 8-2 victory over Quebec les Capitales on Tuesday evening at Stade de Municipal de Quebec.
The Saints didn't show any fatigue from their Monday travels jumping all over starting pitcher Adam Kudryk in the first inning. They sent 10 men to the plate and scored five runs and it started with what looked like a harmless error by second baseman Jonathan Malo on lead off hitter Jim Rapoport. Jose Hernandez singled him to second. Shane Costa drove home Rapoport with a double to right giving the Saints a 1-0 lead. Ole Sheldon made it 2-0 with an RBI single. Tanner Townsend collected one of his three hits with an RBI double to make it 3-0. With one out Benji Johnson walked to load the bases and Jon Townsend knocked home two with a double giving the Saints a 5-0 lead.
The Saints made it 7-0 in the third when they loaded the bases with the first three hitters. Johnson singled, Jon Townsend walked and Adam Frost reached on a sacrifice bunt which the pitcher Kudryk dropped trying to field. Rapoport and Hernandez added sacrifice flies to score the two runs.
Saints starter Alberto Rolon, who struggled in his first two outings, showed his 2011 form when he won 10 games for the Saints. Despite walking six les Capitales he made the pitches when he needed too. In the fourth he loaded the bases with nobody out on a single and two walks, but he got a double play off the bat of Josue Peley that scored a run. Rolon got out of the inning when Patrick D'Aoust lined out.
In the fifth inning Rolon ran into the same issue this time walking the lead off man in the inning, and with one out walking two more to load the bases. Once again Rolon got a huge double play to get out of the inning unscathed. Rolon went 7.0 innings allowing one run on three hits while walking six and striking out two.
The Townsend brothers, Tanner and Jon, finished with five of the 11 hits with Tanner going 3-5 with two doubles, RBI and a two runs scored while Jon was 2-4 with two doubles, two RBI and a run scored.
The same two teams meet in game two of the three game series on Wednesday night at 6:05 p.m. central time. The Saints send RHP Robert Coe (2-0, 1.46) to the mound against les Capitales RHP Bryan Rembisz (1-0, 4.50). The game can be heard on Club 1220 KLBB.
