Columbus sent 11 batters to the plate in their explosive six-run fifth inning and went on to route the Charleston RiverDogs, 12-3, in South Atlantic League action Friday night in front of 5,749 fans at Joseph P. Riley, Jr. Park.

With the victory, the Catfish take three of four in the four-game series from the RiverDogs, who complete a 2-4 homestand. Columbus improves to 7-1 in the season's second half and 34-44 overall while Charleston falls to 2-6 since the All-Star break and is 47-31 overall.

In their monsterous fifth inning, into which Columbus entered with a 2-1 lead, the Catfish pounded Charleston reliever Chace Vacek for six runs in an outing for the second time in a week.

Omar Luna led off with a double down the left field line and was followed by two consecutive Vacek walks. With the bases loaded and no outs, Columbus proceeded to record six consecutive singles that surrounded an error and a walk. The first out of the inning came on center fielder Abraham Almonte's assist to nail a runner at third.

After Vacek finally recorded the second out when Luna popped to third, Charleston manager Torre Tyson inserted Nick Asselin for his RiverDogs debut, and the newcomer got Chase Fontaine to ground out to second to end the six-run, seven-hit rally.

The Catfish pushed two runs across in the first inning, taking advantage of four walks from starter Wilkins de la Rosa (3-2). Quinn Stewart was credited with a RBI on a come-backer to de la Rosa and Stephen Vogt earned an RBI when he drew a bases loaded walk to make the score 2-0.

Charleston scored its first run in the second inning when Austin Romine and Carmen Angelini each singled, moved up on a passed ball, and Romine scored on Taylor Holiday's groundout to shortstop, bringing the hosts within one at 2-1.

After Columbus exploded for its six-run fifth, the RiverDogs scored twice in the bottom portion of the stanza. After consecutive walks to Almonte and Justin Snyder, Bradley Suttle loaded the bases on an infield hit to shortstop. Jesus Montero lined hard to third for the second out, but Romine singled to left field to plate a pair of tallies and pulled Charleston to within five at 8-3.

The Catfish extended their lead to 10-3 in the seventh as they opened with three consecutive singles against Asselin, with the third serving as an RBI knock for Vogt. Luna took care of the 10th run on a RBI groundout.

Columbus added a pair of unearned runs in the ninth on an error and four hits with Fontaine and Cody Cipriano accounting for RBI singles against Charleston's fourth pitcher Dan Kapala.

Catfish starter Jason Ragan (6-6) threw five complete innings and surrendered three runs on six this while walking four and striking out three.

All told, Charleston pitchers walked seven batters.

Leading Columbus' 15-hit attack were Stewart and Vogt with three apiece while Fronk and Wrigley each had two.

Of Charleston seven hits, Suttle and Austin Romine each had a pair.

The RiverDogs now take to the road for a two-game series at Savannah with Saturday's game set for 7:00 pm. Charleston will send righty Noel Castillo (6-4, 3.58 ERA) to the hill while Savannah will start righty Nick Carr (1-1, 2.95 ERA).
