LAKEWOOD, NJ - Ranfi Casimiro threw 7.2 scoreless innings as Lakewood threw their second straight shutout in blanking West Virginia 4-0 on Wednesday afternoon at FirstEnergy Park.
The win gives Lakewood their third straight victory and they pull within two games of the Power for first place in the Northern Division. They are now 16-10/49-45 and have won 10 of their last 13 games.
The BlueClaws have now thrown 24 straight scoreless innings, their longest stretch since a 26-inning scoreless stretch from July 10-12, 2013 against Rome and Hickory, which was also the last time they threw back to back shutouts.
Casimiro gave up three hits and two walks over his 7.2 scoreless innings while tying his season high with six strikeouts. He improved to 6-5 with the win.
Lakewood got on the board in the fourth inning on a Jiandido Tromp RBI double off the centerfield fence. Colten Brewer, Power starter, came out after allowing one run over four innings, falling to 2-8.
Neither team scored until the seventh, when the BlueClaws scored three times - on a Deivi Grullon RBI triple, on a SAC fly by Gustavo Martinez, and on a solo home run by Herlis Rodriguez. Rodriguez's home run was his 8th long ball of the season and came off Jose Regolado, who gave up three runs in the seventh.
Joey DeNato got the last four outs for his sixth save of the year.
Cord Sandberg's fourth inning single extended his hitting streak to 10 games, while Kyle Martin went 0-4 and his 10-game hitting streak came to a close.
The series with West Virginia continues on Thursday night. LHP Austin Davis (2-2) starts for Lakewood against RHP Austen Coley (10-5).
