
7 Walks Sink Crawdads in 8-2 Loss

Asheville, NC - The Hickory Crawdads out-hit the Asheville Tourists Wednesday night but they couldn't out-walk the hometown team, as the 'Dads issued 7 free passes in an 8-2 loss at McCormick Field.
Hickory finished the game with 10 hits to Asheville's 7, but the Tourists seven walks bested the Crawdads two. Asheville also was able to condense their offense primarily into their three run-scoring innings, with the Tourists collecting four of their walks and five of their hits in frames that produced a run. The 'Dads bats were victimized by a pair of costly double plays in addition to leaving 8 men on base resulting in the team's first loss of the season at McCormick Field.
The scoring began in the 2nd, when Asheville reached Crawdads starting pitcher Cody Buckel for four runs on three hits and two walks for a 4-0 score. Buckel walked the inning's leadoff batter Roberto Ramos before a double by Shane Hoelscher and a walk to Dom Nunez loaded the bases with no outs. Tourists DH Yonathan Daza followed with the frame's big blow in the form of a bases clearing, 3-RBI triple to left before Ryan Stephens delivered an RBI double off the wall in right to finish off the inning.
Hickory reliever Joe Filomeno kept his team in the game with three scoreless innings out of the bullpen, allowing the 'Dads to cut the deficit to 4-2 with a pair of runs in the top of the 7th. Jonathan Meyer started the rally when he reached on an Asheville throwing error while Carlos Arroyo reached on a single to set the stage for Juremi Profar who got the Crawdads on the board with an RBI double off the wall in left. One batter later Jose Cardona delivered an RBI sacrifice fly to center field to bring in another tally and cut the 'Dads deficit to two.
The Tourists would quickly pull away again however with three runs in the bottom of the 7th and one more in the 8th against Crawdads relievers Chris Dula and Shane McCain to give them the final 8-2 score they would win by.
Asheville starting pitcher Sam Howard (5-8) earned the win with six shutout innings on seven hits, one walk, and four strikeouts. Buckel (0-5) took the loss for Hickory after giving up four runs on three hits and five walks over his three innings pitched.
Profar (2-4, 2B, RBI) led a group of four 'Dads hitters with a multi-hit game, including Arroyo (2-3, BB, R), Jairo Beras (2-4, 2B), and Eduard Pinto (2-4).
The Crawdads (56-38/12-14) and Tourists (49-46/17-8) will play again Thursday night in game two of their 3-game series, with first pitch scheduled for 7:05 pm.
