HAGERSTOWN, MD - The Hagerstown Suns (13-13, 48-46) took two different two-run leads early on Wednesday, and then hung on for a 4-3 win over the Savannah Sand Gnats (10-15, 49-46) in the first game of a three-game series at Municipal Stadium. This was the first meeting between the two teams since Savannah defeated Hagerstown three games to one in the best-of-five South Atlantic League Championship Series in 2013.

The Suns jumped on the board early on Wednesday with a two-run frame in the bottom of the first. With two outs 1B Jose Marmolejos smacked a single up the middle. Catcher Raudy Read followed with a single to left, putting runners on the corners. Then, CF Dale Carey came to the plate, and he lifted a double to left, driving in Marmolejos. The ball hit by Carey was misplayed by LF John Mora, which allowed Read to score as well all the way from first and make it 2-0.

Savannah didn't wait long to slice that deficit in half. In the top of the second DH Eudor Garcia led off with a triple, his third of the year. Mora then made up for his defensive error by lacing a line drive double to right, bringing in Garcia to make it 2-1. In the third the Sand Gnats evened things up when catcher Patrick Biondi led off with a single, and then two batters later was brought home from second on an RBI single by SS Luis Guillorme.

Hagerstown again took the lead in the bottom of the third on a solo homerun by Marmolejos. It was his seventh homerun of the season, bringing him one shy of the team lead. Marmolejos finished the game a triple shy of the cycle. It was his third three-hit game this season and he wound up reaching base four times.

Another solo homerun, this one off the bat of LF Jeff Gardner in the bottom of the fourth, made it 4-2 Hagerstown. It was Gardner's second homerun in as many games, and made it the ninth multi-homerun game this season for the Suns. All four Suns runs in the game were scored with two outs.

Savannah again cut its deficit to one in the fifth, this time thanks to three consecutive one-out singles. However, that would prove to be the last run for either team as both teams bullpens combined to pitch 6.2 shutout frames. Starting RHP Mario Sanchez (5-4) earned the win for Hagerstown. He threw five innings, giving up three earned runs on seven hits while striking out three. Starting RHP Michael Gibbons (0-3) suffered the loss for Savannah. He pitched 5.1 innings, surrendering four runs (three earned) on 10 hits and three walks while striking out two. RHP Koda Glover was credited with the save for the Suns in his first opportunity this season.

These teams will continue their series at Municipal Stadium with game two on Thursday July 23. The Suns will send LHP Connor Bach (3-1) to the mound for his 12th start and 18th appearance this season. He will square off against RHP Scarlyn Reyes (9-4) for Savannah. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05pm. For tickets call 301-791-6266 or go to www.hagerstownsuns.com.
