Charleston RiverDogs News Release
CHARLESTON, S.C. -- The Charleston RiverDogs did not get a baserunner for the first five innings and were shut out 2-0 by the Delmarva Shorebirds in the first game of the series Wednesday night at Joseph P. Riley, Jr. Park.
Josh Walker (5-2) took a perfect game into the sixth inning. He walked Collin Slaybaugh to start the frame, and Alexander Palma hit a single to center that broke up the no-hitter. Walker was pulled from the game after 5 1/3 innings, earned the win and silenced the 3,031 fans on in attendance.
Delmarva (15-11 second half, 48-46 overall) jumped in front early with two two-out runs in the top of the first. Cameron Kneeland drew a walk, stole second, and scored on an RBI by Yermin Mercedes. Mercedes advanced to third on a wild pitch and Elier Leyva drove him in with a single to right.
Both teams went scoreless for the remaining eight and a half innings. Jordan Foley (3-4) gave up the two runs in the first and took the loss for Charleston (9-17, 43-53). Garrett Cortright worked around a one-out infield single and stolen base by Jorge Mateo to set down the RiverDogs in the ninth for his ninth save of the season.
Vince Conde went 0-for-4 in the game. His hitting streak came to an end at 11 games, one short of his season-high.
BALLPARK FUN: Prior to the game, many lawyers from the Lowcountry attended Continuing Legal Education Night at The Joe, in memory of local attorney Stanley Feldman who passed away last year. South Carolina Supreme Court Chief Justice Jean Toal hosted the seminar. An intense bubble ball showdown on the field entertained fans in between innings. Fans also had fun dancing in between innings, as popular tunes were played throughout the stadium. In the mascot dance party, a cow mascot joined in on the fun!
COMING UP: The RiverDogs continue their three-game series against Delmarva Thursday at 7:05 p.m. Charleston will send RHP Joey Maher (1-4, 2.73 ERA) to the mound against LHP Brian Gonzalez (4-6, 5.78 ERA) for the Shorebirds. You can watch the game live at MiLB.tv or listen to all the action on "The Big Talker" 1250 WTMA, WTMA.com, and RiverDogs.com.
Enjoy Thirsty Thursday's "Happy Hour" with $1 beers and music in the Ashley View Pub presented by Budweiser. DJ Natty Heavy will once again spin popular tunes throughout the game, presented by 95SX. Thursday is also Go Green Night sponsored by Charleston County Environmental Management. Every Thursday going forward, the RiverDogs will be paying homage to the standard red Solo cup, everybody's favorite beverage receptacle. During the Seventh Inning Stretch after "Take Me Out to the Ball Game," the Red Solo Cup song will play in the stadium and all fans in attendance will toast to the red Solo cup.
