El Paso Chihuahuas News Release
ROUND ROCK, Texas - The Pacific Coast League announced this afternoon that El Paso Chihuahuas' infielder Casey McElroy and Fresno Grizzlies' pitcher Brady Rodgers have been named the Player and Pitcher of the Week for May 2-8.
McElroy tied for PCL-bests by hitting .500 (14-for-28) with 9 RBI. His 14 hits led all of Minor League Baseball, while his 11 runs paced all Triple-A players. Furthermore, McElroy connected for six extra-base hits, registered 21 total bases and had a 1.234 OPS (.484 on-base, .750 slugging). The California native played in all seven of the Chihuahuas games last week, collecting multiple hits in six and scoring multiple runs in five.
After starting the year 1-for-13 in six games, McElroy has two-plus hits in eight of his last nine contests, hitting .514 (18-for-35) since April 26. He has spent his entire professional career in the Padres organization after being selected by San Diego in the 11th round of the 2011 First-Year Player Draft from Auburn. Through 400 career games, McElroy has hit .270 with 29 homers and 208 RBI. He previously was honored as Player of Week on June 25, 2012 with the Single-A California League's Lake Elsinore Storm. McElroy is the second Chihuahua to win this award this season, as outfielder Hunter Renfroe did so for the week of April 18-24.
In his only appearance of the week, Rodgers tossed a four-hit, complete game shutout, striking out nine in a May 4 start against Reno. It marked the first nine-inning, complete game shutout in the Pacific Coast League since August 17, 2015 when Sacramento's Ty Black did so against Round Rock. Additionally, Rodgers' outing was the PCL's first nine-inning, complete game shutout on four or fewer hits with no walks since May 7, 2013, when Colorado Springs' Tyler Chatwood did so against Iowa. Rodgers allowed only one Aces runner to reach second base all game.
The 25-year-old is in his fifth professional season with the Astros - and third in Triple-A - after being selected by Houston in the third round of the 2012 First-Year Player Draft out of Arizona State. He has gone 34-31 in 94 games (76 starts) with a 4.38 ERA (456.2 IP, 222 ER), sporting a 4.51 strikeout-to-walk ratio (366 strikeouts, 81 walks). Rodgers won his only other Pitcher of the Week award in June 2013 with Single-A Lancaster. The last Fresno pitcher to win this award was Mike Hauschild for the week of August 3-9, 2015.
