Iowa Cubs News Release
Papillion, NE - Daniel Vogelbach crushed a pair of home runs and Jake Buchanan gave Iowa 7.0 innings as the I-Cubs (15-14) clinched the series against the Omaha Storm Chasers (17-13) three games to one with a 10-3 victory Monday at Werner Park. Iowa handed Omaha its first series loss of the season and in doing so, improved to a winning record for the first time in 2016.
Iowa's bats were hot from the start as the first four batters of the game drilled singles to put the I-Cubs on top, 2-0. With two runners on, Vogelbach lifted a ball over the left-field fence for a three-run home run, his fourth of the year, to extend the Iowa lead to 5-0 after one. Omaha sat down the next six batters, but Vogelbach ignited the Iowa offense once again with a solo shot in the fourth, his second of the game. Iowa scored a pair of runs in the next two frames to make it 10-0, I-Cubs.
Iowa starter Buchanan had a perfect game running through 3.2 innings, before Whit Merrifield spoiled the effort with a two-out single in the fourth. The righty recorded 5.0 total scoreless innings before Omaha broke open the shutout in the sixth with three runs, including a controversial two-run homer from Whit Merrifield that sailed over the left-field foul pole. Buchanan (2-1) exited after 7.0 innings, allowing three earned runs off eight hits and one walk, while striking out four to take the win.
Entering in the eighth, Armando Rivero sat down the first two batters he faced on strikes, before walking the next two. He then forced a foul ball pop up to get out of the inning unscathed. Carl Edwards Jr. took the ninth and allowed one hit and struck out three.
Vogelbach went 2-for-4 with a pair of home runs and four RBI. John Andreoli went 3-for-5, while Shane Victorino and Taylor Davis each tallied two hits.
Iowa returns to Principal Park to face the Nashville Sounds, Tuesday at 6:38 p.m. for BIGS Baseball Bingo Night and Kids Night. For more information or tickets, visit www.iowacubs.com.
