Asheville Tourists News Release
CHARLESTON, SC-- Omar Carrizales has played professionally in the Colorado Rockies farm system for nearly two and a half years. The outfielder spent 2013 with the Dominican Summer League Rockies and played with Rookie Level Grand Junction in 2014. A few commonalities have taken place in each of those first two seasons that have carried over to his 2015 campaign with the Tourists. First, Carrizales batted over .300 those first two years; he was hitting .350 entering Friday's game. Second, Carrizalez has never hit a Home Run, not one. Until now.
With the Asheville Tourists leading the Charleston RiverDogs 8-5 in the top of the eighth inning, Carrizales squared up an offering from Andre Del Bosque that soared down the right field line. The distance was not the question as would the ball stay fair as it traveled up the line. A few seconds after Carrizales made contact, the baseball skipped off the very top of the foul pole and shot into the palm trees well beyond the outfield wall. The Home Run made the score 10-5 which ended up as game's final tally.
Max White put Asheville in front with a two-run single in the first. Drew Weeks connected with an RBI double in the third. After the RiverDogs used a Tourists error to take a 5-3 lead in the fourth, Asheville rallied with a five-run sixth. Dom Nunez lined an RBI single to right and Luis Jean bunted in Wes Rogers to tie the game. Carrizales then put Asheville in front with a triple to deep center. A RiverDogs error and a Josh Fuentes RBI single capped the comeback rally.
Helmis Rodriguez picked up the win by working six innings. Blake Shouse and Josh Michalec tossed the final three frames and kept Charleston from putting a runner in scoring position. White finished 4-for-4 with a double, a walk, and two stolen bases while Forrest Wall added three hits including a triple. Asheville finished with 17 hits in the game.
The Tourists are back in action on Saturday night at 6:05pm for game three of their four game series against the RiverDogs.
