Greenville Drive News Release
Savannah, GA - The Greenville Drive's offense showed up on Saturday night after being shut out the night before. Unfortunately, the Savannah Sand Gnats offense showed up as well, and they handed the Drive their fifth straight defeat with a 10-6 win.
The Drive (31-25) jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the top of the first after an RBI single by Rafael Devers, but the Sand Gnats (29-27) put up a four-spot in the third inning against Jeffry Fernandez to take the lead. A Drive error plated the first run, and the big blow of the inning was a three-run double to left field by Wuilmer Becerra.
In the top of the fifth, the Drive bounced back with a four-run inning of their own, knocking Savannah starter Corey Oswalt out of the game in the process. A Savannah error scored a run, and a two-run single from Devers tied things up at four. Jordan Procyshen followed with an RBI single of his own to put the Drive ahead.
The Drive's lead would be short lived, as the Sand Gnats tagged Jamie Callahan (0-5) for another four-run inning in the bottom half of the fifth. Becerra doubled to tie the game, and Eudor Garcia followed that up with a two-run double to put Savannah on top for good. A John Mora RBI single later in the frame made the score 8-5.
Paul Paez (2-0) earned the win for Savannah with three solid innings of relief in which he allowed only one run on an RBI single by Javier Guerra.
Becerra and Garcia powered Savannah's offense on Saturday night with three hits and four RBIs apiece. Mora and Luis Guillorme added two hits each, with Guillorme scoring a trio of runs. Devers paced the Drive with three hits and three RBIs on the night, and Guerra and Carlos Mesa chipped in with two hits.
The series finale in Savannah begins at 2:05 on Sunday afternoon, and the Drive look to avoid the sweep of the four-game series and create some separation on their Southern Division lead, as Savannah has cut the margin to two games. RH Michael Kopech (2-3, 2.62) takes the ball for the Drive, and the Sand Gnats will send LH Brad Wieck (2-5, 3.49).
