Savannah Sand Gnats News Release
Savannah, GA - A big night from Savannah sluggers Wilmer Becerra and Eudor Garcia, led the Gnats to a 10-6 win over the Greenville Drive. Becerra and Garcia combined for five hits, three doubles, eight RBI and three runs scored.
The Drive (31-25) scored first, with a run in the top of the first inning. Second baseman Mauricio Dubon singled, went to second on a sacrifice bunt, and raced home on third baseman Rafael Devers bouncing ball single into left field.
The Sand Gnats (29-27) took a temporary 4-1 lead with a four-run bottom of the fourth. Centerfielder John Mora began the inning with a double down the right field line and came around to score to even the game at 1-1 on catcher Adrian Abreu's groundout to shortstop. After a pair of walks loaded the bases, right fielder Becerra cleared them with a three-run double to the wall in left field.
The Drive scored four runs in the top of the fifth to grab a 5-4 lead, and in the process chased Savannah starter Corey Oswalt from the ballgame. The big hit was a two-run single into right field by Rafael Devers that tied the game.
Savannah answered back with four runs in the top of the fifth. Becerra doubled down the left field line to tie the game at 5-5 and then Garcia followed with a two-run double into the right field corner that put the Gnats ahead for good. Garcia scored three batters later on Mora's RBI single into centerfield.
The Gnats extended their lead to 10-5 on a second two-run double from Garcia in the sixth.
Greenville added a run back in the eighth to complete the game's scoring.
Savannah reliever Paul Paez earned his second win of the year for his three innings of scoreless relief.
With the win the Gnats moved to two games behind the Greenville Drive for first place. The Gnats, who have won five straight games and 16 of their last 21, are also two games over .500 for the first time in the 2015 season. The first place Drive have lost five straight.
