
'Birds use balanced attack to beat I's

KANNAPOLIS, N.C. (June 6, 2015)- The Delmarva Shorebirds used six different innings to score seven runs and beat the Intimidators, 7-2, Saturday night in front of 4,126 fans at Intimidators Stadium supported by Carolina HealthCare System.
Yency Almonte (4-3) was charged with loss, working 5 and 2/3 innings, allowing five runs on 10 hits while walking two and striking out two.
Delmarva grabbed a 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning off Intimidators' starter Almonte, who allowed consecutive singles to lead off the game. With runners on the corners TJ Olesczuk grounded out to Christian Stringer, scoring Jay Gonzalez from third. The next at-bat Conor Bierfeldt doubled, scoring Cameron Kneeland.
In the second inning, Delmarva extended their lead to 3-0 when Ronarsy Ledesma (1) cranked a no doubt leadoff home run over the left field wall.
Trailing 3-0, Kannapolis plated their first run of the game in the home half of the third inning. With bases loaded Stringer grounded into a double play, scoring Ryan Plourde from third.
Delmarva added runs in the fifth and sixth inning to make it 5-1. Olesczuk knocked home Gonzalez and Yermin Mercedes drove in Derek Peterson.
In the eighth inning, Delmarva added more insurance. With bases loaded Gonzales flew out to left field scoring Peterson to make it 6-1.
Kannapolis added one run in the eighth inning to make it 6-2 but never got any closer.
In the top of the ninth, Delmarva put the game away when Olesckuk homered to deep left field to make it 7-2.
Matthew Grimes earned the win (4-3) going 6.0 innings, allowing one run on six hits while walking two and striking out five.
Tanner Banks and Connor Walsh combined to go the final 2 and 1/3 innings, allowing two runs on 3 hits while walking one and striking out two.
The Intimidators and Shorebirds wrap up their 4-game series Sunday starting at 5:05 at Intimidators Stadium supported by Carolinas HealthCare System. Right-hander Zach Thompson (0-0, 0.00) gets the start against Delmarva righty Josh Walker (0-0. 2.25). Sunday is also Kid's Day presented by Cornerstone Church.
