New Britain Rock Cats News Release

Ryan Carpenter struck out a career-high 11 batters and allowed only one hit over eight innings, pitching the Rock Cats to a 6-1 over the Binghamton Mets Friday night. Carpenter turned in one of the best pitching performances of his career in front of a crowd of 5,789 at New Britain Stadium. After retiring the first 10 hitters, the Gonzaga University alum allowed the Mets their only hit of the game, a home run off the scoreboard in left by T.J. Rivera.

"All three of my pitches were working for me. I felt like I was cruising through the line-up," said the 24-year-old southpaw, whose sharp-breaking curveball kept the Mets hitters off balance throughout the game.

Carpenter did not know what to expect, when he took the mound. "My curveball was all over the place, when I was warming up in the bullpen," he said.

The Rock Cats defeated the Mets for only the third time in 13 games with Carpenter winning two of those contests. "Yes, we talked about that before the game," said Carpenter, referring to Binghamton's dominance over the Rock Cats this season.

Mike Tauchman, who won Thursday night's game with a walk-off single, continued his torrid hitting with three hits, a single, double and triple. He had two cracks at becoming the first Rock Cat in franchise history to hit for the cycle, but he flied out and grounded out in his remaining two at bats.

New Britain first baseman Jordan Patterson broke open a close game in the fifth inning with a tape-measure, two-run home run over the batting practice facility in right field. Catcher Ryan Casteel added two hits and two RBI and Noel Cuevas had two hits and an RBI to pace a 13-hit attack.

"Our goal is to win series the rest of the season," said Rock Cats manager Darin Everson, as New Britain captured the opener of the three-game set.

The Rock Cats play game two of the series against the Binghamton Mets Saturday night at 7:05 at New Britain Stadium. Colorado Rockies pitcher Chad Bettis will pitch for the Rock Cats against the New York Mets Double-A affiliate. Bettis is on a rehabilitation assignment.
