Lake County Captains News Release
(Lansing, MI) - Cleveland's 2019 first round pick Daniel Espino made his High-A debut on Thursday night and struck out nine men over four innings, but the Lake County Captains (34-29) were shutout in a 4-0 loss to the Lansing Lugnuts (30-33) at Jackson Field.
Lansing struck first in the opening frame. Drew Millas hit a first-pitch single to left-center to give the Lugnuts a one-out baserunner. Michael Guldberg then worked a walk to move Millas to second and Jordan Díaz grounded an RBI single through the left side to give the Lugnuts a 1-0 lead.
The Lugnuts tacked on another run in the fourth. Díaz walked with one out and William Simoneit followed with a single. A walk to Elvis Peralta, Jr. loaded the bases and Cobie Vance knocked in Díaz with a sacrifice fly to right to give Lansing a 2-0 lead.
Lansing added two runs in the bottom of the fifth inning to lead 4-0. Three consecutive hits cost Captains reliever Kevin Coulter. After recording two strikes to the leadoff man, Shane Selman singled to start the frame. Two more strikes to open the at bat to Drew Millas before Millas doubled and moved Selman to third base. With runners on second and third Coulter balked, allowing Selman to score and advancing Millas to third. Coulter recorded two strikes to start the at bat to Michael Guldberg, but he punched an RBI single to right field that brought Millas home.
Daniel Espino (0-1) worked four innings on the mound in his debut but took the loss. He struck out nine Lugnuts, allowing two runs on three hits and three walks.
Jack Cushing (3-0) earned the win in relief for Lansing. He spun five scoreless innings in relief. The Captains mustered three hits and walked twice against Cushing. He registered two strikeouts.
Tanner Burns gets the ball for the Captains in game four of the series on Friday. First pitch at Jackson Field is scheduled for 7:05 p.m.
