Caps Visit Bucs for First Meeting in 2016
February 13, 2016 - United States Hockey League (USHL)
Madison Capitols News Release
Urbandale, IA - The Madison Capitols (16-20-3-3) will look to pick up a standings point in their fourth straight game while breaking a two-game losing skid as they visit the Des Moines Buccaneers (18-20-2-0) on Saturday at Buccaneer Arena.
The Capitols won their lone other meeting with the Buccaneers in Des Moines, defeating the home team 3-1 on March 13 of last season.
Des Moines, like the Capitols, have dropped two straight games, including a 6-3 loss at the hands of the Lincoln Stars on Friday evening. The Buccaneers have given up more goals than any team in the Western Conference this season, surrendering 137 tallies in 40 games.
Madison has garnered points in the standings in each of its last three games, but have fallen victim to extra-time heroics in each of the last two games. In Omaha on Friday night, the Capitols broke even after trailing 2-1 after two periods on a goal by Marcel Godbout. However, the Lancers got the last laugh, as a Nick Jenny one-time blast in overtime knocked the Capitols out of Ralston Arena with just a single point.
The Des Moines offense has been paced by one-time Capitol Kenny Hausinger, who ranks among the top 15 scorers in the USHL with 35 points in 40 games. The Capitols' Sam McCormick rests 15th in the league in scoring with 34 points in 41 games played.
In net, the Capitols got a strong performance out of newcomer Drew Hotte in Omaha, as the former Waterloo goalie stopped 28 pucks in the 3-2 overtime loss, including multiple odd-man rush stops and point-blank denials.
Des Moines has struggled to find stable goaltending this season, as Jan Ruzicka & Nick MacNab have combined to post a 3.38 goals against average and .887 save percentage.
It is the first of two meetings between the Capitols and Buccaneers this season; they will reconvene at the Alliant Energy Center on March 19.
The Capitols' next venture on their nine-game road trip is a two-game stop in Muskegon against the Lumberjacks on Feb. 19-20 at the L.C. Walker Arena. Puck drop is set for 6:15 p.m. CT on Friday and Saturday, with coverage on 106.7 FM/1670 AM, The Zone.
The Capitols return home for a two-game weekend on Friday & Saturday, March 11-12, at the Alliant Energy Center for a pair of 7:05 p.m. puck drops against Sioux Falls and Youngstown respectively.
March 11 marks the Capitols' Cross Check Cancer initiative, as proceeds from ticket package purchases will benefit the UW Carbone Cancer Center, in conjunction with UW Health Sports Medicine, the Capitols' 2015-16 presenting sponsor.
March 12 brings about the return of four-legged friends to the Coliseum on Pucks N' Paws night, presented by Animart. Dogs will be permitted into the Alliant Energy Center on game night, and each pup will receive a doggy goody bag!
