Omaha Lancers News Release
Ralston, NE - In front of their tenth sellout crowd of the season at Ralston Arena, the Omaha Lancers took down the league-best Cedar Rapids RoughRiders, 4-1, on Saturday night in front of 3,540 fans at Pink in the Rink.
Late in the opening period Matt Meier put the Lancers ahead 1-0 over visiting Cedar Rapids. After a great original save by RoughRiders goaltender Zack LaRocque, the puck rebounded right in front of the crease. Players from both sides crashed the front of the net trying to gain possession. LaRocque reached out to try and grab the puck but Matt Meier poked it under his pads for the 1-0 lead. The goal was Meier's fifth of the season and came with just 1:18 left in the opening period. Assists were given to JC MacLean and Brannon McManus.
In the second period Nick Rivera continued his point streak with his 20th goal of the season to give the Lancers a two-goal lead. Rivera took the puck down the right wing side of the ice and to the offensive zone. Rivera then cut to the net and lifted the puck over the left shoulder of Zack LaRocque for the 2-0 lead just 1:19 into the middle frame. The goal was Rivera's 32nd point this season and was assisted by Austin Alger and Cody Fleckenstein.
Later in the second period, Cedar Rapids pulled back to a one-goal deficit. After Josh French was denied on a short-handed breakaway opportunity, the RoughRiders brought the puck back to the offensive zone and set up. Jack Ahcan moved to the top of the circle and left a hard shot go that beat Lancers goaltender Kris Oldham for his ninth of the year with assists from Karch Bachman and Taylor Brierley. The goal came at 11:34 of the second period.
A wild sequence in the third period and the Lancers took back a two-goal lead thanks to Jake Massie's first-career USHL goal. Goaltender Kris Oldham made a shoulder save at the top of the crease and the puck went straight up in the air, off the cross bar, and landed to his right where the defense cleared it up the right wing wall. On the rush out through center ice and into the Lancers' offensive zone, Jake Massie took a drop pass and ripped the shot by Zack LaRocque for his first USHL goal and a 3-1 lead. Assists were credited to Nathan Krusko and Mitch Perrault at 9:38 of the final period.
Omaha put the game out of reach later on the power play. At the 11:55 mark, Josh French from the top of the right wing circle, sent a hard pass to the side of the net where Brian Williams tapped in his 11th goal of the year for a 4-1 Lancers' lead over Cedar Rapids. The point was French's only of the game and 34th of the season.
The Lancers held on for the 4-1 victory over the RoughRiders. Kris Oldham recorded his 12th win of the season stopping 13 of 14 shots he faced.
The Lancers are on the road Monday night to face the Fargo Force inside Scheels Arena at 6:05 p.m. Fans can listen live to the game beginning at 5:50 p.m. with the Valpak Pregame Show on "The Mighty" 1290 KOIL, Mighty 1290 KOIL Mobile APP, www.mighty1290koil.com, and www.FASTHockey.com.
