Winnipeg Goldeyes News Release
WINNIPEG, MB - The Winnipeg Goldeyes beat the Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks 5-3 at Shaw Park on Thursday night.
The Goldeyes took an early lead with three runs in the bottom of the first. Josh Romanski led off with a line drive single to left and went to third on a single down the right field line from Grant Heyman. Reggie Abercrombie grounded a single up the middle that scored Romanski with the game's first run. After the runners advanced on a deep flyball to centre from Josh Mazzola, Tucker Nathans lifted a sacrifice fly to centre that scored Heyman. Josh McAdams singled sharply through the left side with two outs to plate Abercrombie.
"It was a good game," said Nathans. "The whole team worked to get the win. Our pitching was good, and we were able to get some important runs. I've felt good over these past few games. As a whole, I think some things are coming together these past two games that we've been needing all season. Hopefully we can just go ahead and keep it up over the next few games."
The RedHawks answered back with two runs in the top of the second. With the bases loaded and one out, Quinn Irey lined a single to left that drove in Charlie Valerio. Derrick Fox followed with an RBI fielder's choice.
In the bottom of the third, Nathans crushed an opposite-field, solo home run to left with one out to re-extend the Goldeyes' lead to 4-2.
After the RedHawks scratched out a run on a double play in the top of the fifth, Winnipeg responded in the bottom half when Mazzola slugged a one-out, solo homer to left.
Kevin McGovern (5-12) earned the win in his final start of the year, allowing three runs, two earned, on seven hits in seven and one-third innings. McGovern walked three and struck out three.
Jack Charleston retired both batters to face him in relief of McGovern in the top of the eighth. It was Charleston's league-leading 56th appearance of the year, which is now just two appearances shy of the Goldeyes' and American Association single-season record.
Victor Capellan pitched a scoreless top of the ninth to earn the save. It was Capellan's 22nd save of the year, which ties a Goldeyes' single-season record set by Oscar Montero in 2004.
DJ Brown (9-3) took a complete game loss for the RedHawks, allowing five earned runs on 12 hits in eight innings. Brown walked one and struck out one.
Heyman has now hit safely in eight games in a row.
The series concludes Friday night with the Goldeyes' final home game of the season. First pitch is at 7:05 p.m. PJ Browne (0-0, 3.81) faces left-hander Will Solomon (10-7, 4.18).
