Sioux Falls Canaries News Release

Lincoln, NE - The Sioux Falls Canaries (3-2) capitalized on an eighth-inning error to break a 4-4 tie, and went on to win 6-4 against the Lincoln Saltdogs (1-4) on Saturday night at Haymarket Park.

Starting pitchers Noel Baca and Jonathan Figueroa dueled scoreless thru the first five innings of the game. The Canaries were able to get to Figueroa in the sixth. Cody Haerther started the inning with a single. Haerther advanced to second base on a bunt single by Cory Harris. In trying to retire Harris at first base, Saltdogs second baseman Shea McFeely threw the ball by the bag, allowing Haerther to advance to third. Trevor Lawhorn followed with a sacrifice fly to right field, scoring Haerther. Deacon Burns throw to home plate bounced off Haerther as he scored, and the error allowed Harris to third. After J.D. Reininger walked on four pitches, the Saltdogs turned to their bullpen and brought in former Canaries pitcher Matt Reilly. With runners on the corners, Kyle Eveland doubled up the right-field line. Both Harris and Reininger scored on the play, giving the Canaries a 3-0 lead. Eveland then scored on a single by Joe Anthonsen to hand the Birds a 4-0 advantage.

The Saltdogs got on the scoreboard in the bottom of the sixth. With one on and two out, Shawn McGill hit his third home run of the season. McGill's two-run shot to right field halved the Canaries lead, 4-2.

Lincoln tied the game in the seventh. With the bases loaded and two outs, Pichi Balet singled to score Shea McFeely and Josh Burrus. Balet's clutch hit tied the game, 4-4.

The Canaries went back in front in the eighth. The bases were loaded on singles by J.D. Reininger, Kyle Eveland, and Joe Anthonsen. After Patrick Reilly grounded into a fielder's choice that saw Reininger out at the plate, Jared Lemieux came up with the bases loaded and two outs. Lemieux hit a groundball to Lincoln shortstop Jake Jadlowski, and Jadlowski misplayed the ball, allowing Eveland to score for a 5-4 lead. Tim Hutting followed at the plate with an RBI walk to score Anthonsen. The run was the last of the game, in the Canaries 6-4 win.

Patrick Lawler (3-0) got the win pitching 1.1 innings in his league-leading 26th appearance of the 2009 season. Adam Daniels (3-2) gave up two unearned runs to suffer the loss for Lincoln. Aaron Cotter sat down the side without a hit or a walk in the ninth to record his second save of the year.

The Canaries and Saltdogs will continue their three-game on Saturday night at 7:05 p.m. The Birds return to Sioux Falls Stadium on Friday, July 17 for a series with the Sioux City Explorers. The series opener will be DAV Night featuring a Team Card Set Giveaway and Friday Night Fireworks presented by Sanford Health.
