CLEVELAND - The Cleveland Monsters, proud American Hockey League affiliate of the NHL's Columbus Blue Jackets, defeated the Stockton Heat on Friday in front of 12,331 fans at The Q, Cleveland's third-largest crowd of the season, by a final score of 5-3. With the win, the Monsters improved to 18-28-4-3 overall this season and with a .406 points percentage, remain alone in seventh place in the AHL's Central Division standings.
The Monsters grabbed a 1-0 lead on Friday when Carter Camper posted a power-play goal at 5:36 of the opening period on feeds from Garett Cockerill and Terry Broadhurst, before Tyler Motte buried an even-strength goal at 6:42 of the first with Sam Vigneault and Calvin Thurkauf tallying assists on the play. Stockton cut Cleveland's edge in half with a Dalton Prout tally at 12:19 of the first and drew even when Brett Pollock scored at 18:01 of the period.
In the middle frame, the Monsters reclaimed the lead with an even-strength Motte tally at 2:13 from Alex Broadhurst and Scott Savage, before Sonny Milano made it 4-2 Cleveland with a five-on-five finish at 12:47 thanks to helpers from Brady Austin and Cockerill. The Monsters extended their lead to 5-3 at 19:49 of the second when Camper netted his second power-play goal of the game with Alex and Terry Broadhurst providing a slick setup. Stockton's Oliver Kylington posted a late score at 13:47 of the third, but the Monsters prevailed by a final score of 5-3.
Cleveland net-minder Joonas Korpisalo improved to 3-4-1 by virtue of a 26-save performance, while Stockton's Mason McDonald fell to 3-1-0 despite stopping 20 of the 25 pucks he faced in two periods of action before Ryan Faragher stopped all six pucks he faced for the Heat in relief in the final stanza.
