Burroughs scores lone goal as Bridgeport sees its five-game win streak come to an end

BRIDGEPORT, Conn. - The Bridgeport Sound Tigers (29-23-5-3), proud AHL affiliate of the New York Islanders, saw their five-game win streak come to an end on Saturday in a 4-1 setback to the Lehigh Valley Phantoms (39-16-3-4) at Webster Bank Arena.
The Sound Tigers outshot the visitors 40-18, including a 17-1 margin in the third period alone, but Kyle Burroughs was the only one who could beat goaltender John Muse (9-1-0). On the flip side, Greg Carey scored two goals for the Phantoms and Muse made 39 saves.
With the setback, the fifth-place Sound Tigers drifted seven points behind the fourth-place Charlotte Checkers for the final playoff spot in the Atlantic Division, but with two games in hand. Bridgeport has 16 contests remaining in the regular season.
Danick Martel began the scoring and put the Phantoms on the board first at 12:32 of the opening frame. After a loose puck drifted into the left corner of Bridgeport's zone, Mikhail Vorobyev skated onto it and sent a back-door pass to Martel, where he nudged it past Kristers Gudlevskis for his 21st goal of the season.
Less than two minutes later, Burroughs tied the game with a blistering slap shot from the point that beat Muse blocker side. Parker Wotherspoon stickhandled at the blue line and issued a pass to Burroughs, who fired a rocket that whistled over Muse's right shoulder for his sixth tally of the season.
The Phantoms grabbed the lead for good at 7:57 of the second period with a power-play goal from Carey. Following an interference penalty to Patrick Cullity, both Carey and Vorobyev entered Bridgeport's zone before Vorobyev sent a lead pass to Carey, who quickly deked Gudlevskis and scored his first of two goals on the night. He buried a wrist shot over the netminder's shoulder to make it 2-1.
Just under 10 minutes later, Carey made it 3-1 with his team-best 26th goal of the season and his third in two games. Phil Varone won a left-circle faceoff to Will O'Neill, who quickly guided the puck to Carey for a slap shot from the high slot at the 17:26 mark.
Cole Bardreau capped the scoring with an empty-net goal at 18:56 of the third period - Lehigh Valley's only shot of the final frame.
The Sound Tigers finished the game 0-for-3 on the power play and 3-for-4 on the penalty kill. Gudlevskis (10-11-5) made 14 saves on 17 shots, but saw his personal four-game win streak come to an end.
Bridgeport fell to 1-4-2-0 against Lehigh Valley this season and 0-3-1-0 in those games at Webster Bank Arena. In addition, the Sound Tigers are 2-4-1-0 when recording 40 or more shots.
Pucks and Paws: The Sound Tigers are right back at it tomorrow afternoon with a 3 p.m. puck drop against the Springfield Thunderbirds at Webster Bank Arena.
