Moose Halts Chicago's Winning Streak
March 10, 2018 - American Hockey League (AHL)
Manitoba Moose News Release
The Manitoba Moose (36-16-4-4) and Chicago Wolves (33-19-6-2) met in a clash of the top two teams in the Central Division on Saturday night. The Moose had the edge in play for much of the first period, playing a stifling defensive game. Manitoba allowed just four shots in the period. The Moose got their best chance off the stick of Brody Sutter who had a good look at the cage, only to be robbed by Kasimir Kaskisuo. Chicago broke the scoreless deadlock courtesy of a five-on-three power play goal with 23 seconds left in the period. Brandon Pirri finished off a quick passing play to give the hosts a 1-0 edge after one.
The defensive struggle carried into the second frame with the teams combining for just 15 shots. Both sides had a power play to work with, but neither could solve the penalty killers to put a tally on the board. Manitoba finally broke through with 3:24 left in the period when Peter Stoykewych was allowed to cruise in and drill a shot in off the post. Stoykewych's eighth of the season left the score tied 1-1 through two periods of play.
Special teams proved to be the key to the game in the third. Manitoba survived Chicago power plays at 4:25 and 10:44 of the period. Eric Comrie did his part to get the Moose through the shorthanded situations, making 12 saves in the final frame. The Moose power play had its second chance to work in the game with with 2:48 to go in the third. It took Manitoba 39 seconds to work the puck to Nic Petan for a one timer that beat Kaskisuo five-hole to give the Moose their first lead of the night. The visitors locked things down from there to capture a key regulation victory, 2-1 over Chicago.
