Lake County Captains News Release
(Eastlake, OH) - Raymond Burgos became the second straight starter to pitch five shutout innings and the Lake County Captains (2-0) peppered the gaps with five doubles, en route to a 6-1 victory over the Great Lakes Loons (0-2) on Friday night at Classic Park.
Burgos (1-0) followed in the footsteps of Opening Night starter Luis Oviedo by blanking the Loons across five frames. The 20-year old lefty limited Great Lakes to two hits and never faced more than five batters in an inning. Burgos struck out four, walked one and ultimately earned the win.
The Captains' offense wasted no time supporting Burgos. For the second night in a row, Lake County scored multiple runs in the first inning. Jose Fermin led off the frame with a double off of starter Andre Jackson and Tyler Freeman followed with a single to center that put runners on the corners. Freeman later stole second to place two men in scoring position and Bo Naylor slapped a single to left field that plated both runners to open the scoring. Two batters later, Quentin Holmes smoked a double to left that brought Naylor home and gave the Captains a 3-0 lead.
Three straight doubles plated two more runs in the third. Will Benson ripped a one-out double over the head of right fielder Romer Cuadrado to start the rally, giving him doubles in each of the first two games this season. Naylor came up next and scalded a double to the gap in left-center that scored Benson. Ulysses Cantu then pulled a double down the left field line that scored Naylor and extended Lake County's lead to 5-0. The Captains added their final run in the fourth when Hosea Nelson scored on a double play ball to make it 6-0.
The Captains held Great Lakes scoreless through the first seven innings, thanks to Zack Draper and stellar defense. Draper got into some trouble in the sixth with a leadoff walk to Jacob Amaya, followed by a soft single by James Outman, but Cuadrado bounced the next ball to Fermin at second and he flipped to Freeman at short to start a double play. Miguel With two outs and Amaya on third, Vargas floated a ball to left and Nelson made a sliding catch to end the inning and keep the Loons off the scoreboard. Draper then worked around a two-out rally with an infield single, an error and a walk to keep Great Lakes from scoring. The Loons ultimately scored their lone run in the eighth on four straight walks by Brady Aiken. Dan Robinson's walk forced home James Outman to make the score 6-1, Captains.
Manuel Alvarez nailed down the win for the Captains and earned his first save of the year. The right-hander took over for Aiken in the eighth and recorded a strikeout and fly out to leave the bases loaded. After Alvarez began the ninth with a strikeout, Drew Avans reached on an infield single, but the Captains' reliever promptly got the ground ball he wanted. Amaya bounced to Fermin who started another 4-6-3 double play with Freeman to end the ballgame.
The Captains have started the season 2-0 with a pair of wins at home and they will travel to Midland, MI on Saturday to play two games on the road at the Loons. First pitch on Saturday at Dow Diamond is scheduled for 4:05 p.m.
