Fort Wayne TinCaps News Release
LANSING, Mich. - Powered by their first two home runs of the season, the TinCaps spoiled the Lansing Lugnuts' home opener with an 8-4 win on a 65-degree Saturday evening at Cooley Law School Stadium.
Fort Wayne (2-1) outfielder Dwanya Williams-Sutton obliterated a 420-foot solo homer to left-center field that landed on the ballpark's concourse to start the scoring in the road second. That was the first home run of the season for the 'Caps.
The TinCaps increased their lead to 3-0 in the third as catcher Blake Hunt delivered a two-run double against Lansing (1-2) starter Juan De Paula, a top-30 Blue Jays prospect. That was the first of two doubles on the night for Hunt, a top-30 Padres prospect.
Meanwhile, Fort Wayne starter Joey Cantillo, a 19-year-old from Hawaii, didn't allowed a hit or a walk through the first three innings as he struck out seven batters the first trip through the order.
Though Lansing did get on the board with a run in the fourth, the 'Caps retaliated in the fifth when third baseman Luis Almanzar clubbed a three-run homer down the left-field line to make it 6-2.
In the sixth, shortstop Xavier Edwards and designated hitter Agustin Ruiz added RBI singles. Ruiz also doubled. Fort Wayne finished with five extra-base hits after having one in their first two games. Ruiz has had two hits in each of the first three contests this season.
The Lugnuts could only muster single runs in the fifth, sixth, and ninth.
Cantillo threw 80 pitches (53 strikes) over 4 1/3 innings. He finished with eight strikeouts to one walk, scattering three singles.
Jose Quezada (1 2/3 innings), Henry Henry (2), and Hazahel Quijada (1) followed Cantillo in relief. Henry didn't allow a hit over two scoreless frames.
