Peoria, IL - Despite scoring eight runs, the Peoria Chiefs fell to 1-2 on the season after a 10-8 loss to the Beloit Snappers in the 2019 home opener. The Chiefs wrap up their series with Beloit Sunday at 5:05 p.m.

The Snappers got on the scoreboard early in the top of the first against Chiefs starter Cole Aker. Lester Madden led off the game with a single and Chase Calabuig followed with a walk. Aker struck out the next two hitters, but Nick Ward reached on a fielding error by Wadye Ynfante in center field that allowed Madden and Calabuig to score to give the Snappers a 2-0 lead.

Brendan Donovan put the Chiefs on the board with not only his first homerun of 2019, it was also his first professional career homerun to make the score 1-0 off Beloit's starting pitcher Bryce Conley. Donovan played just four games last year in State College and has a hit in all three games this season.

In the second inning, Lars Nootbaar tied the game with a solo home run to center field. Nootbaar also homered Friday in Cedar Rapids and has a team-high two homers in three games.

The Snappers continued to fight after Aker walked Logan Farrar with one out in the top of the fourth and Cobie Vance drove him in with a double to push the Snappers up 3-2. Aker left with two outs in the fourth and Jacob Schlesener got the final out of the inning.

Peoria retook the lead in the bottom of the fifth scoring three, to take a 5-3 lead. Delvin Perez led off with a double. Donovan followed up with a single, scoring Perez, and Donovan ended up advancing to third on an error by Calabuig. That tied the game up at three. After a strikeout of Edwin Figuera, Nolan Gorman doubled and Donovan advanced to third. Donovan scored on a wild pitch from Conley, to put Peoria up 4-3. Gorman advanced to third, and after a Whalen walk, runners were at the corners. Leandro Cedeno hit a sac fly to score Gorman to make the score 5-3 and that is where the scoring ended in the fifth.

The top of the sixth started with a walk to Ward and with one out, the bases were loaded via two more walks. After a strikeout of Marcos Brito, a walk to Madden to bring the score 5-4, Calabuig hit a two-run single to push the Snappers ahead 6-5.

After back-to-back strikeouts to start the bottom of the sixth, Donovan walked and advanced to second on a wild pitch. Figuera singled and Donovan scored to tie the game at six.

The seventh inning got away from the Chiefs in a hurry, as the top of the seventh started with a walk and back-to-back singles to load the bases. Farrar grounded out to Brady Whalen, but a run scored to give the Snappers the lead 7-6. Vance then singled in a run to make it 8-6. Brito followed up with an RBI double to bring the score to 9-6. Finally, Madden singled in a run to make it 10-6.

Peoria kept fighting, as Zach Jackson led off the inning with a solo homerun to cut the deficit to three, 10-7. After a scoreless top of the ninth, Peoria managed to push one more run across the plate. Gorman led off reaching first on a wild pitch for the third strike. Whalen singled to put runners on first and second. Cedeno grounded out, but managed to move the runners over to second and third. Nootbaar also grounded out, but Gorman scored the final run for the Chiefs and the game would end 10-8.

Aker got the start and took the no decision after going 4 2/3 allowing one earned run, three hits, with four walks and eight strikeouts. Schlesener (0-1) took the loss as he allowed six runs on three hits with five walks over 1 2/3 innings and three strikeouts.
