Cedar Rapids Kernels News Release
GRAND CHUTE, WIS. - Cole Sands carried a no-hitter through five innings Saturday in his professional debut for the Cedar Rapids Kernels before a pair of unearned runs against the bullpen lifted the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers to a 2-0 shutout at Neuroscience Group Field at Fox Cities Stadium. The Timber Rattlers (2-1) and the Kernels (1-2) combined for five hits Saturday with four produced by Cedar Rapids.
Sands retired the first 13 batters that he faced including five consecutive strikeouts to begin the contest. He worked around a hit batsman and a walk during the fifth inning to successfully finish his no-hit start. Sands tallied a game-high-tying eight strikeouts overall.
Max Lazar (1-0) matched zeroes with Sands early and ultimately finished with six shutout innings to earn the victory. Lazar gave up a pair of singles in the first inning but answered with 14 consecutive outs. He gave up one walk but no other damage over his final five frames.
The Timber Rattlers broke up the no-hitter and the shutout versus Tyler Palm (0-1) within the sixth. Antonio Piñero hit a leadoff single, and Pablo Abreu added a walk. Two batters later, David Fry grounded into an error down the third-base line that allowed both runners to come home and give Wisconsin its 2-0 advantage.
Reese Olson and Michael Mediavilla each recorded scoreless outings in relief to secure the Timber Rattlers' shutout victory. Olson was credited with his first hold while Mediavilla retired the final four batters of the game to lock down the save.
