Quad Cities River Bandits News Release
Burlington, IA- The Quad Cities River Bandits were shut out in both games of a doubleheader on Saturday night at Burlington's Community Field. The Bees took the opener 3-0 and won the nightcap 1-0 on a walk-off home run by Jordyn Adams.
The River Bandits missed a big opportunity in the bottom of the first inning of the opening game. Ross Adolph and Jeremy Pena, the first two hitters of the inning were both walked. They each advanced 90 feet on a wild pitch to leave runners on second and third with no outs. Burlington starter Robinson Pina retired the next three hitters in order to escape unscathed.
In the Bees half of the second, they took advantage of three walks to do all of the necessary damage. Spencer Griffin opened the inning with a single and quickly stole second base. Bandits starting pitcher Cody Deason walked the next two hitters to load the bases. He rebounded to strike out Connor Fitzsimons on a full count pitch, but walked Jordyn Adams to force in the first run. Humberto Castellanos replaced Deason after that at bat and immediately surrendered a two-RBI double down the first base line to Livan Soto to extend the lead to 3-0.
Neither team would score the rest of the way. Pina worked 5.0 scoreless innings and recorded seven strikeouts while allowing just one hit. The right-hander also issued five walks. Mayky Perez earned the save with 2.0 innings out of the pen.
Castellanos retired the final ten batters he faced after the double by Soto. Devin Conn worked the final 2.0 innings out of the bullpen, striking out five in the process.
In the second game, neither team could muster anything at the plate until the final at bat of the game. Reliever Brett Daniels had worked two scoreless innings in relief, stranding runners in scoring position in both frames. He struck out D.C. Arendas to begin the seventh before Adams ended the game with his drive off of the light tower in left center field.
R.J. Freure and Daniels combined to strike out 11 hitters. The River Bandits have collected 11 strikeouts in all three games so far, each lasting 7.0 innings. Freure worked 4.0 scoreless innings and surrendered one hit and three walks.
The River Bandits (1-2) will meet the Bees (2-1) one final time in this season-opening series on Sunday afternoon. First pitch is set for 2:00 p.m. The Bandits will turn to RHP Brett Conine in a match-up with Burlington RHP Luis Alvarado.
All River Bandits games are broadcast on 1170 K-BOB and TuneIn Radio. Home games are also available with video on MiLB.TV.
