Dayton Dragons News Release
Bowling Green, Ky. - Dayton starting pitcher Jhon De Jesus combined with two relievers on a five-hit shutout as the Dragons defeated the Bowling Green Hot Rods 6-0 on Saturday night. The win was the Dragons second straight victory and improved their record to 2-1.
De Jesus, who missed the entire 2018 season with a shoulder injury, made his first appearance of 2019 and allowed only one runner to reach second base over five innings of work. He allowed three hits and two walks with three strikeouts to earn the win. Relievers Eduardo Salazar and Eddy Demurias each tossed two scoreless innings to close out the Dayton victory.
The Dragons took a 1-0 lead in the top of the fourth inning on a long home run to left field by Mariel Bautista, his first of the young season.
The Dragons added to their lead in the seventh inning. Bren Spillane lined a single to left field with one out and Miguel Hernandez reached on an error. With two outs, Shard Munroe singled off the glove of the second baseman as Spillane scored from second. Claudio Finol followed with a hit to right to bring in Hernandez to make it 3-0.
Dayton added three more runs in the eighth inning to take a commanding 6-0 lead. Jay Schuyler reached on an infield single with one out, went to second on a ground out, and advanced to third on Bren Spillane's two-out single. Schuyler scored on a throwing error before Juan Martinez connected on a two-run double to the fence in left-center field to close out the scoring.
Four different Dayton players collected two hits. Bautista led the way with the home run and is now 5 for 12 (.417) on the year. Schuyler, Spillane, and Martinez also had two hits.
The Dragons middle infield combination of Finol at second base and Hernandez at shortstop enjoyed an exceptional night defensively. Both players made multiple outstanding plays to prevent hits.
Up Next: The Dragons (2-1) close out the series in Bowling Green (1-2) on Sunday at 3:05 p.m. (EDT). James Marinan will make his first start of the year for the Dragons. Bowling Green will counter with former Wright State pitcher Caleb Sampen. The Dragons open a four-game set on Monday night at Fort Wayne.
