Comstock Park, MI: The South Bend Cubs and West Michigan Whitecaps were neck and neck after four and a half innings from Fifth Third Ballpark on Saturday afternoon. Entering the bottom of the 5th, starter Eury Ramos surrendered four hits and three runs. Ultimately, it was enough for West Michigan to beat South Bend by a final of 3-1.

After tossing a 1-2-3 4th inning, Ramos looked to be cruising through his Midwest League debut. A single and two doubles began the 5th inning rally for the Whitecaps. Ramos was pulled after retiring Jose King for the second out.

Ryan Lawlor then entered for the Cubs. Lawlor, a returner from the 2018 South Bend roster, holds a tie for the most strikeouts by a South Bend Cubs pitcher in a single game. That came last July against the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers. The lefty picked up right where he left off by shutting down the Whitecaps in the 5th with a strikeout.

Lawlor finished with 3.1 complete innings and four strikeouts in his 2019 debut. South Bend was able to spark one rally in the top of the 7th, but scored just one run on a wild pitch.

The Cubs now own a record of 2-1 entering the fourth game of the 140 game Midwest League season tomorrow afternoon. First pitch is set for 2 p.m. in the second game of the quick series in Comstock Park. The team will begin a four game series against the Great Lakes Loons on Monday night.
