Kane County Cougars News Release
CLINTON, Iowa - Jorge Perez blasted his club's first homer of 2019 in the top of the first inning, but the Kane County Cougar (1-2) offense sputtered the rest of the night in a 6-1 loss to the Clinton LumberKings (2-1) on Saturday.
After Perez's solo shot in the first inning, the Cougars managed just one hit the rest of the way, an L.T. Tolbert single with one out in the fourth inning. Despite no hits in the fifth inning, the Cougars had runners at first and second with one out after Tra Holmes reached on an error and Jose Herrera walked. David Garza followed with a pop out and Jorge Perez struck out looking to end the threat. Including Garza and Perez's at-bats in the fifth, the final 14 Cougars were retired in order.
Clinton's offense came in a pair of multi-run innings. Cougar starter Justin Lewis walked the first three batters of the fourth. Marcos Rivera singled in the game-tying run with nobody out. The next batter, Ricardo Cespedes, became Lewis' fourth walk of the inning, chased the starter from the game and gave Clinton a 2-1 lead. With Kenny Hernandez in to pitch, Clinton grabbed two more runs in the fourth on a hit-by-pitch and RBI ground out from Demetrius Sims.
In the sixth, the LumberKings added on with Christopher Torres' two-RBI double.
Lewis (0-1) took the loss in his first Midwest League start, surrendering four runs on two hits over 3+ innings. Lewis walked four batters and struck out four. Hernandez settled in to pitch four innings, giving up two runs (one earned) with seven punchouts. Blake Workman tossed a scoreless 8th.
Clinton's stout pitching was led by starter Humberto Mejia (1-0). The right-hander lasted five innings, scattering the lone Cougar hits and the homer to Perez. George Soriano (1) notched the save with four perfect innings of relief and five strikeouts.
The four-game series between the Cougars and LumberKings concludes on Sunday afternoon. The Cougars call on lefty Frankly Soriano, while Clinton turns to Peyton Culbertson on the mound. First pitch is scheduled for 2:00 p.m. Follow the action live with Joe Brand on AM 1280 WBIG or on kccougars.com.
