FLORENCE, KY - The Traverse City Beach Bums avoided the sweep with a 13-10 win Sunday night as they put up a franchise record 20 hits, combining with the Florence Freedom for 31 total.

Brad Hough drove in a career best seven RBIs for Florence. Hough clubbed a grand slam in the bottom of the second inning to tie the game at five. He later hit his second homer of the game, tenth of the season, for a three-run shot in the eighth to cut the Beach Bums lead to 13-9.

Florence needed to come back early as starter Billy Schlee didn't get out of the first while getting touched up for four runs, three earned in 2/3 of an inning. Traverse City scored another run off Jordan Towns in the second to take a 5-0 lead.

Brett Bostelman started for Traverse City and after a 1-2-3 first, the right-hander walked the first four he faced in the second to force in a run. The next batter he faced was Hough and it was his last as the grand slam knotted the game at fives.

Shawn Joy entered for Traverse City and held the Freedom right where they were for four innings. Meanwhile, Joy's teammates scored him two runs in the top of the third inning off Mike Epping's seventh home run of the season to make it 7-5. Joy (5-0) would get the win for Traverse City.

Towns (1-5) went 2 1/3 innings for the Freedom, allowing three runs in the loss.

Billy Mottram (21) homered for Florence with two-outs and nobody on base in the seventh off Nick Pepper to cut the Beach Bums lead to 7-6. But on two home runs in the top of the eighth off reliever Steve Szkotak the Beach Bums built their lead back up to 13-6.

Hough's homer and Erold Andrus' RBI single in the bottom of the eighth made it interesting going to the ninth at 13-10. Florence loaded the bases for Tim Grogan on his bobblehead night at the park in the bottom of the ninth with two outs, but he grounded out to short and the game was over.

The loss was Florence's (33-38) first all season to Traverse City at Champion Window Field. The two ended up splitting the season series between the two at 6-6. Up next for the Freedom after the day off Monday is a six game road trip to Windy City and Rockford. Follow the Freedom while on the road on Classic Country 106.7 FM WNKR or www.1067WNKR.com.
