Lake Erie Crushers News Release
Avon, OH - Alberto Rolon worked six strong innings for the Lake Erie Crushers as the right-hander earned his first professional victory in a 6-2 Crushers win over the Midwest Sliders on Sunday evening at All Pro Freight Stadium.
Rolon, a rookie from Sonoma State University, held Midwest hitless through four innings. He allowed a pair of runs in the fifth on a Jimmy Baker solo homer and a Zack Pace RBI single, but got out of a bases-loaded, one-out jam without any further damage. Rolon struck out one and walked four. "I was really happy with the way Alberto got himself out of a jam and then come out and throw a scoreless sixth," said Crushers Manager John Massarelli. "That shows us a lot."
The Crushers jumped on Midwest starter Kyle Wink in the second inning, scoring three times to take command of the game. Tyler Johnson and Brad Griffiths each hit RBI singles, while Arden McWilliams scored on an error by Sliders catcher Lee Rubin.
After Midwest's two-run burst in the fifth put them within one of the Crushers, Gordon Gronkowski delivered a three-run homer in the bottom of the inning to restore control of the game to Lake Erie. Gronkowski's two-out blast was his 16th homer of the season and it gave the Crushers a 6-2 lead. Shannon Sprouse and J.J. Pacella combined to throw three scoreless innings out of the bullpen to secure the victory for the Crushers. "We played Crusher baseball over the last two games," said Massarelli. "Good baserunning, timely hitting and quality pitching from start to finish."
The Crushers are now 42-30 on the season and will enjoy a well-deserved off day on Monday. The team will return to the field on Tuesday morning as they will host the Southern Illinois Miners at 11:05 A.M. Cardoza Tucker will get the start for the Crushers.
The Lake Erie Crushers are the newest expansion team in the Frontier League, an independent professional league with 12 teams throughout the Midwest. The team plays its home games at All Pro Freight Stadium, the new 5,000 capacity ballpark located at the intersection of I-90 and Route 611 in Avon. Season tickets and Mini-plans are on sale now!
