Bullpen Shines in 3-2 Win over Fisher Cats

The first place Erie SeaWolves, behind another strong pitching performance, took down the New Hampshire Fisher Cats, 3-2, on Saturday night at Northeast Delta Dental Stadium. The SeaWolves are now a season-high 22 games above .500 in the second half.

The Fisher Cats jumped ahead in the bottom of the first against Erie starter Joey Wentz as Josh Palacios led off with a solo home run for a 1-0 lead.

Erie responded in the second against Fisher Cats starter Nate Pearson. Daniel Pinero doubled down the left field line with one out. He scored on a two-out Sergio Alcantara base hit to make it a 1-1 game.

The game remained tied into the bottom of the fifth. Kevin Smith led off with a double and came home to score on a Forrest Wall bloop single to left for a 2-1 Cats lead.

Pearson held the SeaWolves at bay, allowing just one hit from the third into the sixth. After the first two hitters of the sixth went down on strikes, Kody Eaves clobbered a solo home run over the wall in right-center, tying the game 2-2. The home run for Eaves was his 14th.

The 'Wolves then took the lead in the top of the seventh against reliver Corey Copping. Chace Numata, who walked in his two prior at bats, connected on a solo home run to right to make it 3-2. The home run for Numata was his fourth of the season and his second in many days. It also extended his hitting streak to a season-best 10 straight games.

The Erie bullpen was perfect on the night. Zac Houston (5-1) came into the ballgame in the sixth and went nine-up, nine-down and struck out four in the process. Houston, who earned the win, has not allowed a run in three appearances since coming off the Injured List. Nolan Blackwood worked a 1-2-3 ninth inning to earn his third save.

Copping (1-2) took the loss allowing a run on three hits in two innings.

Wentz took the no-decision allowing two runs on four hits with on walks and nine strikeouts in five innings of work.

Erie looks for a series sweep on Sunday afternoon at 1:35 p.m. RHP Casey Mize (6-2, 2.65 ERA) takes the mound for the SeaWolves against RHP Hector Perez (7-4, 4.70 ERA).
